Wirt County investigation confirmed
Staff ReportsELIZABETH -Wirt County Circuit Court Judge Bob Waters confirmed there is an on-going investigation in Wirt County.
"No charges have been filed," Waters said Monday. "Right now, they are in the investigation stage."
Waters referred questions to the special prosecutor or Wirt County detachment of the West Virginia State Police.
Josh Downey, Roane County prosecuting attorney, has been appointed special prosecutor for the case. He was unavailable for comment.
Reports of a state police investigation involving one or more county officials and their records have been circulating in Wirt County for almost two weeks.
Wirt County Commission President Charles Murray confirmed there was an investigation.
"I can't tell you anything about it," he said. "There is an investigation going on and we've all been instructed to say nothing more about it. I know the state police are investigating."
Murray said he was unsure of the nature of the investigation. He said he has not seen any complaint spelling out what troopers will be seeking.
Wirt County Prosecutor Leslie Maze said she had no comment on the investigation.
Circuit Court Clerk Theresa Rollins said she had no knowledge of what the investigation concerned.
"I've heard about it," she said. "Reporters have been calling all morning and that's what they are asking about. I know nothing about it."
County Clerk Suellen Calebaugh said she had no comment.
