GLENVILLE -An 8-year-old boy collapsed Monday during youth league football practice in Gilmer County and died Tuesday, officials said.
Details of the incident were unavailable, however, the boy was identified as Tyler Maxwell who died at Women and Children's Hospital in Charleston on Tuesday, a spokesman said.
Monday was the opening day of football practice for the youth league at the Gilmer County High School Titans practice field. Also on the field were about 30 high school players and Head Coach Bucky Stewart.
"It was pretty sad. He was an 8-year-old playing football. That's killed me. I was there when it happened," said Stewart. "Tuesday we started out the day with a prayer. Our guys are all going to go to the wake and we're going to put stickers on our helmets for Tyler Maxwell."
