Airport reps will not be at council meeting

POSTED: July 14, 2009

PARKERSBURG -Officials with the regional airport will not attend tonight's city council meeting.

After failing to make the agenda, members of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport have decided against attending.

Wood County Commissioner Wayne Dunn, who serves on the Wood County Airport Authority, hoped to meet with council to discuss a second funding request.

In May, city council rejected a request to give $20,000 to the airport. Some council members said they would be more inclined to provide funds if other area cities contributed.

In recent weeks the airport has received funds totalling $3,500 from Vienna, Williamstown and North Hills.

"Every other town in Wood County has provided a donation to the airport," airport manager Terry Moore said. "We would hope that would answer some of the questions city council has."

Dunn said they hope to meet with Finance Committee Chairman Tom Joyce to decide whether to meet with the committee or go before the full council.

"Either one is fine with us," Dunn said.

Mayor Bob Newell recommends airport officials meet with the committee first

"It is proper for them to come there," he said.

With the airport not scheduled, the bulk of tonight's agenda concerns grant programs and the first reading of an ordinance for a lease/purchase agreement with BB&T for three pickup trucks for the Public Works Department totaling $87,690.

Council will also consider several resolutions to accept grants. Two of the proposed resolutions involve Justice Assistance Grants (JAG), one for $62,000 for Prevention Resource Officers for Parkersburg and Parkersburg South High School. A second JAG grant is for $64,500 for officer salaries and equipment purchases for the multijurisdictional drug and violent crime taskforce.

Council will also consider a resolution for a grant program contract for the Volunteer Action Center of the Mid-Ohio Valley for $5,000 to establish a volunteer library and resource center for nonprofit organizations as well as a resolution for a $10,000 grant program contract for the replacement of deteriorated sidewalks in the Julia-Ann Square Historic District.

Shouldn't the headline read, City Doesn't Place Airport On Agenda?

Shouldn't the tone of the article be; City failed to put the Airport on the agenda and referred them back to finance.

Didn't the Finance Committee already vote on this request? Didn't council ask the airport to go and get money from other cities?

Why is it "proper" for them to meet with the committee again, when they have already voted in favor of funding?

Is it because the council as a whole voted it down at that time? I'd honestly like to know the mechanics of it. Is that the way that Parkersburg City Council works?

Seems Williamstown, Vienna, and North Hills work differently and don't use committees to the same extent as Parkersburg. I just would like to know how Pkbg works compared to the other towns in the county....
