Authorities pull body out of river

HOCKINGPORT, Ohio - After five days of searching, authorities Wednesday believe they have found the body of 20-year old Jeremy Midcap of Parkersburg, who has been missing since the boat he was in capsized Saturday.
Belpre police Chief Ernest D. Clevenger said a body was found at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday by personnel in a Vienna Volunteer Fire Department rescue boat across the river from Hockingport. The body was found in the water near the West Virginia banks of the Ohio River, several miles downriver from where the boat capsized in Belpre, he said.
Wood County Coroner Mike St. Clair said the body was sent to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital for later transport to the medical examiner in Charleston for a scientific identification. St. Clair believes it was Midcap.
Wood County Sheriff's Sgt. D.E. Westfall said the body was that of Midcap.
"This is just an extremely sad happening. Unfortunately, we deal with accidents like this two to four times a year. Life jackets save lives; there's no doubt about that," Clevenger said. "We will have to see what the coroner finds, but as far as I can tell, this was just an unfortunate boating accident."
Midcap has been missing since shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday when an 18- to 19-foot pleasure boat carrying seven passengers capsized midway between the Belpre boat ramp and Blennerhassett Island.
Dave Midcap, 50, of Parkersburg, the father of the missing boater, was pronounced dead Saturday at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital after being pulled from the water.
The five other passengers were not injured in the accident.
Parkersburg Fire Department, Vienna Volunteer Fire Department and members of units from Belpre, Little Hocking and Pond Creek volunteer fire departments participated in the five-day search.
A cadaver dog from Pond Creek Volunteer Fire Department arrived Tuesday to aid rescue workers. The dog picked up a scent in the water near the area the boat capsized. Divers searched the area Tuesday night but were unable to locate Midcap, officials said.
Another cadaver dog was brought in Wednesday morning from Grafton, said Vienna fire Chief Daniel Goodwin. It also picked up a scent in the same area as the first dog, but divers were not called to the scene, he said.
"I'm certainly glad for the family now that it's over. It's really sad, but at least we were able to bring some closure to the family," Goodwin said.
Several family members of Midcap were gathered at Access Park in Belpre when authorities told them the news Wednesday evening.
"We are just really relieved," said Brandy Midcap, sister of Jeremy Midcap.
St. Clair credited volunteers who searched the river to help relieve the family's anxieties.
"They've been out there every day doing this," St. Clair said.
Writers Jess Mancini and Jeffrey Saulton contributed to this story.

Interesting that two cadaver dogs had "hits" on the same spot with no one being found. This SHOULD stimulate some review by authorities.

I'm happy to see that the first comment has been deleted. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of this young victim and his father. Try to remember the happier times; sometimes it makes it easier to accept and go on.

I just want to say "Thank you " to all of the men and women who help in such sad and hard situations like this one. These people are not thanked enough ! They risk their lives and time spent with their families to help others in need on a daily basis .This is a very sad situation and I'm glad that the family can now know where their family member is and have closure of this horrible accident. I pray for them and hope that they can have peace .

I have lived near the Ohio river most of my life, Im 51 years old.I NEVER go in or on the Ohio river. Its dirty, dangerous, and sometimes it stinks. Why anyone would find it appealing is beyond me.

bowlermom, how insensitive and ignorant can you be? My father drowned in the Ohio river, and I can tell you, it haunts me everyday of my life. Maybe you should consider some sensitivity classes......

Bowlermom-maybe you need to go to a psycho ward. I've been in this same situation with a drowning victim. You have NO IDEA what a relief it is when a loved one's body is found. A person has no closure until it happens, the wondering and the waiting is the worst experience I have gone through in my life. I hope, if anything this devastating ever happens to you, others will be more understanding.

Wow, why is it people have to make something sinister out of everything. I think I would be relieved to know that my brother's body was recovered and I could know he was at peace. This accident is being investigated as it should by the agencies in charge of boating accidents and regardless of what they may find it in no way diminishes the loss felt by this family. My sympathy goes out to the friends and family of these two men, it is a tragedy. Bowlermom... you should be ashamed, everyone deals with grief in their own way and so rather than pointing out the obvious, you are showing your own ignorance.

My husband has been part of that family looking for their, son, cousin, nephew, brother, friend. He spent several days stomping through the brush, debre, to try to help them. This was a very close family. Everyone handles things in their own way. Please allow this family some dignity as they morn the passing of their family members. They not only lost one, they lost two to a tragic accident. And because of this so called "mickey mouse" police force you say. They have been wonderful in keeping the family informed and protect them from certain things. I think they did a wonderful job in doing what they do best. I think we owe a great thank you to all the fire depts, divers, police force, coroner, dogs, red cross, and all the friends and family and volunteers that donated so much time for this wonderful family.

bowlermom I think she meant they were relieved to have her brother's body to put to rest. As well as give the family closure. Have a little compasion and quit reading to deep into the comment she made. GEEZ! She just lost her father and her brother, give her a break. If you can do better then maybe you should become a police officer, or better yet a detective so you can solve every death or crime this area has.
