Police investigating airplane shooting

POSTED: June 13, 2009

PARKERSBURG - Wood County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting of a small aircraft last month.

According to reports released Friday, a Cessna 172 aircraft was shot in the wing on May 31 during a routine roundtrip flight between the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport and the Jackson County Airport in Ravenswood between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

"We believe the incident occurred in either Jackson or Wood County, but there really is not much we know about this case," said Sheriff Jeff Sandy.

Terry Moore, manager of the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport, said the pilot said he had been flying at about 800 feet above the ground during the trip and did not feel the shot hit the aircraft.

"The shot did not affect the flight, but that does not mean that it couldn't have," Moore said Friday.

The type of firearm used in the incident is unknown as is the motive for the shooting, Sandy said.

"I don't know why, but I don't immediately think it was malicious," Moore said.

Sandy said the incident was reported nearly two weeks after the shot was fired because the owner of the plane recently noticed it and reported it to Sandy's office.

The name of the airplane's owner is not being released.

"Just because no one was hurt this time does not mean it is OK for people to shoot at planes," Moore said.

"I hope people know that and, if they don't, that they learn it."

Sandy said the sheriff's department is looking for any information people may have about the incident.

"We are really just hoping that someone with information about this comes forward," Sandy said.

No at least some of the guys who get drunk & shoot up in the air will realize that a bullet can hurt someone up there too. Also, what comes up, must come down. It could hit someone on the ground too.

I think 800 feet altitude is not that far up, maybe if he flew over my place that low I would think of putting one in his plane too. Lot of farmers raise livestock and don't want them panicked because some ass in his plane thinks it is a game.

It was probably a hunter who thought the plane was "Moth Man. I mean after all it wasn't malicious.
