WASHINGTON - A Wood County man was injured in an accident on Lake Washington Road Thursday morning.
Wood County Sheriff's Deputy Rob Sims said Josh Gains, 21, was involved in a single-car accident around 9 a.m. Thursday.
Sims said according to witnesses, Gains' vehicle, a 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva, was traveling at an excessive speed and went left of center , hitting the guardrail. Gains over-corrected, sending the car into a spin.
"The car went over top of a culvert, struck a utility pole, breaking it off two feet above the ground," Sims said.
Sims said the car spun again, hitting the utility pole before landing on its roof in the driveway of a Lake Washington Road resident.
Sims said Gains was entrapped and had to extricated by the Blennerhassett Volunteer Fire Department.
Gains, a former standout athlete at Parkersburg South High School, was taken to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, before being transferred to Charleston Area Medical Center.
He is listed in serious condition.

People don't always understand that even when people are trained how to react in an accident, things can still go wrong. I was in an accident where I flipped my vehicle. There was oil on the road's surface from a short rain; I eased on the breaks, corrected the wheel slightly and still ended up in a field. Sadly, with all the testing for "crashability" and with all the instruction, one cannot control what is going to happen if there is a possibility that it will happen. Basically, cars can only be controlled to a certain extent-them comes God or a very ugly stopping point. I knew Josh in highschool (not well). He is a strong guy, I hope he doesn't let this incident be a speed bump in his life-makes the best of what happened.

Keep Josh his wife Kayla and family in your prayers. They have a long recovery ahead, from what I understand this young man will never walk again. will not run and play with his new baby. Pray for the strength for these 2 young people just starting out there life together, to make it. They have a long way to go. God be with you Kayla and Josh.

Enough already! If people would focus on sending out positive thoughts and prayers instead of judging people. Clean your own door step b-4 dirting others. Josh is an awsome young man, with a big heart. We love you Josh! May God touch you and comfort you and your family during this time. Love and prayers!

This young man is about to become a father yet we blame his parents. He was the one who drove to fast not his parents or anyone else. now he will pay dearly for his mistake.

Oh come on...sometimes parents teach their kids exactly what they're supposed to, but they still make mistakes. Why does everything have to be the parents fault, especially when we're talking about a 21 year old adult. My prayers are with Josh and his family.
