No agreement
WVU-P to ask public for ideas on name, logoBy MICHAEL ERB

PARKERSBURG - West Virginia University at Parkersburg wants student, staff and community input on the future of the college.
The WVU-P Board of Governors met in emergency session Monday, but stopped short of taking any official action on a series of agreements with West Virginia University.
Instead, the board has asked for creation of an online survey and several student, staff and public forums to be held within the next 21 days to give the board guidance on how to proceed.
The situation arose last year from the passage of House Bill 3215, which split the regional campus from its parent university. The deal would allow the two schools to continue their relationship, but only if an agreement is reached by July 1.
Two of the three agreements needed to keep the colleges working together have been approved by WVU's Board of Governors, but have not yet been accepted by the local board. The first is a memorandum of understanding, which would make WVU-P an affiliated campus of WVU. The second is a trademark agreement which would give the local college use of WVU's name and logo, but only for the next two years.
The third agreement, which is still being worked out, would govern services between the two schools. Officials said that agreement likely will not be finalized until June.
Members of the WVU-P board say the limited trademark agreement would not give the local campus the security it needs to grow, but members of the WVU board say they are protecting the university's trademark.
"This institution would be put into a position of negotiating our name every two years," said board Chairman Joe Campbell. "We are looking for the best, long-term solution which would serve the students and the community."
Some board members expressed concern over both signing the agreement or having the college strike out on its own, saying the uncertainty or loss of the WVU name and logo could affect the college's ability to attract and retain students and faculty.
"This creates a lot of angst," said board member Gerard El Chaar. "I don't know if any of you would want to invest in something that in two years might go away."
Other board members expressed frustration with WVU's decisions which have been made under an interim president and relatively new board of governors.
"We've probably been kinder to WVU than they've been to us," said member Keith Burdette. "I'm of the opinion WVU-P doesn't need WVU."
Still other board members urged the group to continue seeking a mutually beneficial solution.
"I understand the trademark concerns," said board member Greg Smith. "We need to keep this thing open."
Burdette, Campbell and other members of the board called for the creation of an online survey which could be given to students, staff and opened to the public to receive more input on the issue. The group assigned board and faculty members to schedule forums on and off campus to allow for more public input.
Dates and times as well as the Web address for the online poll likely will be released within the next week, officials said. A second emergency meeting has been scheduled for May 18 for the board to receive an update on the data collection.
The board is scheduled to vote on the contracts at its June 10 meeting.
"At the end of the day, the board will have to make a decision," Burdette said.
In the meantime, Campbell said the local board would continue to follow up with Gov. Joe Manchin's office and the WVU Board of Governors. The WVU board is schedule to meet again June 4 in either Morgantown or Charleston.

I think We've gotten to the heart of the matter, the trademark and WVU. WVU has been this way about their trademark on every front. For example, the flying WV is one of the few universities trademarks you can't get on a license plate in VA. There are other examples, but now we know their (WVU) issue at least. They have been, and apparently continue to be very protective of their trademark, which according to his autobiography, was developed by the football coach Don Nehlen.

As a non-traditional student at WVUP I would like to first say that this college and ciriculum has been an amazing challenge for me....I LOVE IT!! I have been taking graphics and animation classes, new to the campus, and have found my instructor extremely skilled and helpful! I don't get any perks from WVU as a student here. I get what I need from THIS campus. I think the WV needs to stay in the name. It sounds more powerful...as powerful as I am becoming from the skills & knowledge I am getting.

The campus has university in its name due to WVU affiliation. Standing on its own, I don't think it has the programs or population to warrant being call a university. Doesn't the state regulate the use of that term?

No taxpayer funded structure (building, highway, program) should be named after one person. Too many other people get slighted in the process.

Howsabout Mountain State College? The Board of Governors at WVU-P should buy Mountain State College and take their name. It sounds alot better than the other names that are being mentioned. Plus, they would not only be getting a catchy name but also eliminating one of their competitors in the area. I think it would be a brilliant move. Mountain State College is currently in sad shape and like an old ailing horse that needs to be put out of its misery. So many positive things could come out of WVU-P buying Mountian State. Think about it everyone!

Lots of successful colleges are named after their home town. I propose the University of Cedar Grove. How about the Rt47 University at Cedar Grove?

I congratulate the Board on their professional demeanor in this last meeting, and for finally getting a grasp on the situation. But I have to agree with Mr. Burdette that it is time to move away from the WVU logo and come up with a new name. As far as the name goes, I guess that's up to other people. However, because of the tireless hours of volunteering his time, energy, enthusiasm and wisdom to this whole process, which is very much appreciated, perhaps an appropriate name would be Burdette University.

There are many online colleges these days, that are nationally acredited. I have attended WVU-P and 2 online colleges, Pheonix U. and Short U. I think being acredited and ease of access is what most people would want in a college. So I would hold a contest for a new name then pick the top few and then set up a poll to vote on it. Would it still be infringement reversed order ? University of West Virginia...

A new name needs to be broader than "parkersburg" or even Wood County. You want to attack students that are not simply from this area. A name is needed that would allow for a draw from Ohio as well as Penn and other surrounding states. NO politicians either. Let's get creative. Something that reflects the beauty of the Mountain State.

Nice negative spin on probably the most productive thing these two schools have done all year (or perhaps longer). I think it's great that they finally got something accomplished. Let's hope that this is a a sign of what's to come.
