Simonton Windows announces layoffs

115 employees lose jobs at Ritchie County facility

By ROGER ADKINS
POSTED: January 23, 2009

ELLENBORO - Simonton Windows laid off 115 employees at its Ritchie County facility because of economic conditions and a seasonal drop in business, a company official said Thursday

Marty Davis, marketing manager for the company, said the layoffs are the result of the poor economic climate in the country and a downturn in the housing market.

"Obviously, we've got some ongoing and significant downturns in the U.S. housing market due to the current economic climate. There's also the usual seasonal drop in business," Davis said. "As a result, we've reduced the workforce in Ritchie County and the Paris facility in Illinois."

In addition to the 115 employees in Ritchie County along U.S. 50, 42 employees of the Paris, Ill., window manufacturing facility are now out of work, Davis said. The employees will receive benefits through the end of January, he said. Only hourly employees were affected by the cutbacks.

"The determination of which employees was based on employee skill and tenure with company," Davis said.

Davis said the company hopes to rehire employees at some point in the future. He could not say when.

"We hope to rehire the employees when business rebounds, home improvement markets recover and when the economy improves," he said.

Company officials understand the gravity of the decision to lay off workers, but the situation could not be avoided, he said.

"We also understand that this situation will have a serious impact on the lives of employees and their families in Ritchie County, Parkersburg and Paris," Davis said. "We value our employees and intend to rehire them as soon as business conditions improve. Decisions to lay off are not taken lightly here."

Davis said the employees were notified last week and the layoffs went into effect on Tuesday.

Str8eeth, if you would like I could give you a great price on Simonton Windows that is very competitive. I own All American Exteriors, and am a fully licensed and insured general contractor that specializes in Simonton Windows. If you could email me your previous bid with all sizes I guarantee I can smash it. Email to r1-man@hotmail****

I'm in Utah and have just had a bid on Simonton replacement windows. I have bids from Utah & Colorado also. I'm not shocked that they are having to lay people off, our economy stinks right now. But these windows are really expensive and maybe if they would reduce their prices a little they would generate more sales and be able to keep people employed. I would love to have these windows in my home, they seem like they have a great product...but as I said, the economy stinks and I'll probably have to go with a less expensive window. Is there anyone out there that actually has a "simonton" window in their home? I'd love to hear from you.

The layoffs at Dupont are contract workers so far. I know, I was one of them. As for Simonton, I worked there for years and they always lay off this time of the year. Most of the time it is voluntary layoffs. I don't remember them announcing it. As for the salaried people at Simonton, there have been a ton of cutbacks the past 2-3 years that haven't made the news.

DuPont has gone to 8 hour shifts. Alot of folks there have lost alot of hours and $$$. I guess moving out of the area really sounds like a good idea.

NOTICE Businesses lay off hourly employees not salary employees and you do not here any salary employees taking a cut to help with layoffs. I hope they get what they give!

I think we will continue to see an overall reduction of our workforce in West Virginia until the economy improves. The unemployment line continues to get longer every day. Rumor mill has it that Dupont has made reductions as well, but for some reason it has not made it to mainstream media. (Heard this from an employee) Also hearing same rumors about Cytec/Alpharma. With everything reported about the aluminum industry in Ravenswood, I have to think it will affect the aluminum facility in Friendly.

If you have a job, be thankful.

Hey Parkersburg News you might want to get the facts straight here.....The employees that were laid off will get their benefits through the end of February not January. I think that all of the people at Simonton that were laid off this go round were smart enough to know that it was going to happen. Does it still*****YES, however we have to do what we can to make it through.

Everyday.... it is another company and more jobs lost. :( More people with no way to feed their families and pay their bills... another loss to the community... Just so depressing. :(
