State holds open call for new spokesperson
By MICHAEL ERBCHARLESTON - Could you or someone you know be West Virginia's next spokesperson?
The state Department of Commerce thinks so. Officials are asking residents from around the state to nominate themselves, friends or loved ones as the next spokesperson for the state.
A panel of judges will choose a person to welcome visitors to the state for its "Come Home to West Virginia" campaign. The contest winner will be featured in print and television advertisements and will travel to Charleston for a photo and video shoot. The winner also will receive a vacation package to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.
Nominations can be made online at www.hometowv.com by filling out the online form and submitting a photo. Participants or those nominating someone are asked to submit a 100-word-or-less essay describing why the nominee would make a great spokesperson for the state. A winner is expected to be chosen in mid-February.
So far area nominees include Judy Sheppard, owner of Professional Services of America; Shannon Cunningham of the West Virginia Grantmakers Association; The Rev. Gary Nelson, pastor at Sandhill United Methodist Church; and Roger Sheppard of WTAP.
All submissions can be viewed at the site, and include the nominee's picture and essay as well as who nominated them.
