By BRETT DUNLAP
POSTED: January 3, 2009

PARKERSBURG - Authorities reported a quiet New Year's holiday.

The Vienna Police Department reported a couple of domestic instances and a DUI Thursday night after the holiday was over. The Wood County Sheriff's Department reported a couple of DUI arrests.

''It was pretty much business as usual,'' said a dispatcher at the Marietta Police Department.

No major accidents were reported.

''Everybody must have been good,'' a Ritchie County dispatcher said.

The state of Ohio saw fewer fatalities this holiday season compared to last year.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported 10 people were killed statewide over the Christmas holiday weekend in traffic crashes on Ohio roads, as compared with 14 people killed last year. OVI-related fatalities declined as well, with four of the 10 fatalities OVI-related, as compared to seven of the 14 fatalities last year.

As of Wednesday, Ohio had 1,102 fatalities compared to 1,255 by the same time the previous year.

The Parkersburg Police Department is continuing its investigation into a suspicious fire at a vacant home at 1007 Lynn Street.

Chief Fire Inspector Tim Flinn said Friday officials now believe the fire was intensionally set. Investigators are following up on leads and are awaiting test results from the state crime lab.

Fire crews responded around 6 a.m. Thursday to the home. Officials said the blaze was largely contained to one room of the structure, which had been a rental property. The fire is estimated to have caused about $30,000 damage.
