Light snow causes problems around Mid-Ohio Valley
By JOLENE CRAIGPARKERSBURG - Small traces of snow caused problems around the area Friday with several schools on two-hour delays or closed.
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Washington County reported several small accidents caused by ice on the roads.
"We've had a few fender-benders and cars sliding off roadways," said a dispatcher for the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department. "Nothing major has happened, though."
These icy patches on roads were responsible for two-hour delays for Belpre City Schools, Caldwell Exempted Village Schools, Noble Local Schools and Warren Local Schools as well as both Pleasants County and Tyler County schools being closed Friday.
St. Marys High School was waited for more than an hour to hear that its football playoff game with Fayetteville High School was still scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today with no changes.
Andy Roche, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, said he was surprised there were school closings and delays.
"The Parkersburg area saw a trace of snow fall without any major precipitation," Roche said.
The Mid-Ohio Valley received a little more snow Friday as the clouds and precipitation moved east, Roche said.
"Wood County and Parkersburg will be having nice weather this weekend," he said. "Sunday is going to be really nice."
Today is supposed to be sunny with a high near 37 degrees and Sunday will continue to have sunny skies and a high of 45 degrees, Roche said.
No precipitation is expected during the weekend with a slight chance of rain on Sunday night.
