Marker being cleaned, not stolen

Roger Adkins and Jolene Craig
POSTED: November 20, 2008

WILLIAMSTOWN - An historical marker in Tomlinson Park on Highland Avenue was not stolen, but removed for cleaning, a state highway official said this morning.

"We took it down, along with a lot of others throughout Wood County," said Tom Potts, supervisor of the West Virginia Division of Highways District 3 sign shop. "They are being refurbished."

On Wednesday, Williamstown Police Chief B.D. Adkins said the sign was reported missing by City Councilman Ron Erb.

"No body told us what was going on," said Mayor Jean Ford.

Potts said that he did not contact the cities from which the signs were taken because the signs do not belong to the cities.

"They are historical markers and the cities really have nothing to do with them," he said. "I should have called, though."

The 2-by-2 foot sign tells Williamstowns history and has been in the park as long as Ford said she can remember.

"I really don't know how long it has been there or who even put it up," Ford said. "As long as I can remember, it has been here."

The West Virginia Highway Historical Marker Program placed the marker, as well as another 1,000 throughout the state, according to the West Virginia Division of Culture and History (http://www.wvculture.org).

The program was implemented in 1937 to encourage tourism during the Great Depression.

Potts said markers are being repaired by Sewah Foundry in Marietta as part of a grant the West Virginia State Archives received.

All of the markers will be returned to their respective spots when the restoration is complete. That could take a couple of weeks, Potts said.

Who's talking about a job requiring a Degree. This is foundery work. WV has many qualified workers who after about a year become highly skilled metal operators r setters, starting with mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, experience working with machinery HS diploma or GED.Median incomes for machine setter, operators and tenders.$15.18 per Hr. Metal Mold makers $20.22 Hr. Sure beats $7.50-$10.00 Hr.being offered locally to job seekers. Some even with college degrees.Bring back the manufacturing jobs that made tis country, with decent wages and benifits. Like jobs at Benson Truck Bodies, Ames, Walker. WAkE UP POLITICIAN!!

Actually, according to the US Census, less than 15% of West Virginians have a Batchelors or higher degree, so your comment was unintentionally correct in one aspect.

Almost hard to believe, but you have to consider the source, s p u n k y. Maybe the "powers that be" didn't think West Virginians have enough sense or that only a handful of us actually "grajeeated" from high school and went on to earn college degrees!!

Your right Catman57. Does anyone else find it odd that a grant was issued to the WV Division of Culture and History for this work and they choose an Ohio Company to do the work. I guess the WV Companies bids were to high or maybe it didn't have to be bid. Let's give WV work for it's struggling employees and employers.West Virginia first. Keep jobs IN STATE !!!

haha *****y, that's hilarious! By the way, does this really need to be under "breaking news"? I wonder if WTAP is interupting their regularly scheduled programing to provide all the up-to-the-minute details.

First let me say I'm not laughing at anyone, only with everyone. Stop for a moment and imagine this being an episode on "The Andy Griffith" show. There would be Barney running around investigating the theft of Mayberry's city sign only to find out the state took it down to clean. We would still be enjoying it on the re-runs. Laughter IS the best medicine.
