Man sentenced in confinement case

By JEFFREY SAULTON
POSTED: November 13, 2008

PARKERSBURG - A Wood County man sentenced in Ohio for having sex with a teen girl in 2007 was in Wood County Circuit Court for a home confinement revocation.

Joshua Levi Carroll, 23, 801 Center St., Parkersburg, stood silent during a hearing Wednesday for home confinement revocation and an innocent plea was entered on his behalf by the court. Judge Jeffrey Reed set Carroll's hearing for 1:15 p.m. Nov. 21.

According to the petition to revoke home confinement, he is accused of failing a drug test when he tested positive for marijuana use.

Earlier this year his probation was revoked but he was placed on home confinement to serve out his sentence. He was also ordered by the court to seek drug abuse and sex offender treatment.

Carroll pleaded guilty on May 12, 2004 to unlawful entry of a dwelling, a lesser- included offense to burglary from a January 2004 indictment. He was sentenced to six months to two years to the Anthony Center for Youthful Offenders and was placed on three years probation after completing the program.

According to the petition to revoke his probation, Carroll was charged in July 2007 with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in Ohio. Other violations listed were he failed to contact his probation officer within 72 hours of the charge, he left Wood County without permission of his probation officer, used marijuana five times, failed to attend substance abuse treatment as directed by his probation officer and failed to attend classes at the day report center on five occasions.

Carroll was convicted Jan. 19, 2007 in Washington County Common Pleas Court after a one-day trial on a charge of having sex with a 15-year-old Belpre girl he met during the summer of 2006 on MySpace social networking Web site.

During the trial, the victim said she inquired about Carroll, and sent messages through his Web site and they corresponded for several weeks over the Internet. On July 7, 2006 Carroll drove to the child's Belpre home to visit her.

In other hearings:

  • Larry Manuel Defrietas, 36, in custody at North Central Regional Jail, was granted two motions in his case. A motion to continue his trial to Jan. 6 was granted by Reed. A motion to sever the counts was also granted. Defrietas was charged with three counts of third-offense domestic battery and will be tried separately on each charge. An evidentiary hearing has been set for 9 a.m. Dec. 30
  • Christopher Carroll Hanson, 46, 1480 Brown Road, Belpre, was arraigned on an amended indictment from the September grand jury. He was charged with third-offense driving under the influence, but the indictment stated he was charged with driving under the influence. He entered a plea of innocent to the indictment and his trial was set for Jan. 6 before Reed.
