Graduates look for student loan help

By BRETT DUNLAP, bdunlap@newsandsentinel.com
POSTED: November 9, 2008

CHARLESTON - A number of programs are available to college graduates to forgive part of the amount they owe on students loans if they meet criteria, such as working in some public service fields.

Certain federal programs are in place that allow percentages of loans to be forgiven if they are employed in field such as educators in low-income communities, said Charlie Fulton, assistant attorney general in the Consumer Protection Division of the West Virginia Attorney General's Office.

''There are also various employers who have their own programs in helping employees pay off their student loans,'' she said.

Certain programs allow a borrower who is employed full-time in a public service field to pay a certain amount, under their initial payment guidelines, for 10 years. If they make those payments regularly on time, at the end of the 10-years, the remaining loan will be dismissed, Fulton said.

The federal College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 provides student loan forgiveness to borrowers who serve full-time in areas of national need such as early childhood educators in low-income communities; nurses; critical foreign language specialists who teach in elementary or secondary schools or use such knowledge as federal employees; librarians; highly qualified teachers who teach bilingual education or who teach in schools that enroll a high proportion of disadvantaged students; child welfare workers; speech language pathologists in elementary or secondary schools; National Service participants; school counselors in elementary and secondary schools that enroll a high proportion of disadvantaged students; and public sector employees.

Bluffster1 - 'good' schools don't advertise like that. No school, not even Harvard guarantees you will make millions. If your friends graduated from a good school, then they should go to the career center on campus. Career centers are free for graduates of those colleges. (at least they are for 'good' colleges.

I'm tired of seeing advertisments for colleges that pretty much make it sound like if u go to thier school u are garanteed to make millions in your profesion. I have several friends that graduated from supposedly good schools only to find that they couldnt get work and had to settle for minimum wage. Sad how these colleges are allowed to rip young people off.

Mr.Alex,

So Sad. Respect is much like freedom - it is never appreciated until it is lost. If you have so little repect for the Office of President - head north, Canada will welcome you with open arms - doubtful, but spouting religious lies only assures me you have the right to speak like a fool.

Feel free to mock President-elect Obama, but I doubt you have been much help with Bush's "No Child Left Behind" - now there is a success story.

Don't worry.... don't worry... BO, "The Messiah", is going to fix everyone's problems! If you owe for your college education, BO is going to fix it so you won't owe anything. And you'll be Super Smart! obama will solve everything! I hear that into his 2nd month in office, he's going to call Jesus and fix religion, and all the problems in Heaven and Hell. I just hope Jesus like soc ial ism. So don't worry.... our soc ial ist muslim president will fix everything.

The US Educational Department should tighten the regulations. Right now they will give any "so called" school student loan capabilites. When a lot of schools that advertise on tv, are completely useless and there is no need to keep grades, everyone passes. The subjects are barely even discussed much less thought to anyone. If they are going to give student loans to these schools they should at least check them out and see the job placement and salary statistics.
