‘Jeopardy!’ donates locally

WAVERLY - Answer: A game donated to Waverly Elementary School to help teachers get students more active and interested in classroom lessons.

What is "Jeopardy?"

Correct!

Jimmy McGuire, a member of "The Clue Crew" on the television game show "Jeopardy!," visited a sixth-grade classroom at Waverly Elementary School Thursday to demonstrate and donate "Classroom Jeopardy!," an interactive electronic version of the television show.

Waverly was one of two local schools to win. The other was St. John Central School in Washington County, which received its prize on Wednesday.

Participants are able to choose from a variety of topics for different point amounts, buzz-in answers and track their scores on an electronic scoreboard.

And, of course, phrase their answers in the form of a question.

"The kids are yelling, they're screaming, just having a great time," said McGuire

Question categories demonstrated Thursday ranged from West Virginia history to school supplies to animated movies to candy bars.

McGuire said part of the appeal of the game is a teacher's ability to tailor the categories.

"Teachers can customize the questions to whatever they are teaching," he said.

Waverly Elementary was one of two area schools to receive the game through an online contest, said Principal Kay Bowling.

"We will be using it primarily in the computer lab, so teachers will be able to check out the game to use in their classrooms," she said. "You can pick your own categories so they relate to the lessons in the classroom. The kids love it and it makes learning fun."

On Wednesday McGuire presented a copy of the game to St. John Central Grade School in Churchtown. McGuire said he has visited more than 50 schools, introducing the electronic game and talking to students about education.
