Wood County man charged in break-ins

By ROGER ADKINS
POSTED: October 1, 2008

PARKERSBURG - A Washington, W.Va., man has been arrested in connection with three recent break-ins.

Joseph Trey Nicholson, 23, Route 3, Box 162A, Washington, was arrested shortly after 5:30 a.m. Tuesday by officers from the Parkersburg Police Department's uniformed division, said Chief Gerald Board. He was being held on $8,500 bond in the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County after being arraigned Tuesday afternoon in Wood County Magistrate Court on three counts of breaking and entering, he said.

Board said police received an alarm call around 5:30 a.m. at Captain D's on Pike Street. Upon arrival, officers saw the drive-through window had been broken.

"It appeared whoever did it had cut themselves in the process. There was evidence of blood found at the scene," he said.

Officers conducted a search of the area and saw a man walking nearby with his hand wrapped in a bandage. The individual later was identified as Nicholson.

"During a field interview, officers determined he was a person of interest in the break-in. As the investigation continued, enough probable cause was obtained to get a search warrant through magistrate court," Board said.

The search warrant was executed at 4205 14th Ave., where Nicholson had been staying, Board said. Officers found items in the residence that allegedly linked Nicholson to the Captain D's break-in, as well as break-ins Sept. 28 at Taco Bell and Jefferson Baptist Temple.

Board said money was taken from both fast-food restaurants and a donation box and various items were taken from the church.

"This is a good example of how crimes can be connected. Sometimes we have one or two, sometimes its a string of similar incidents. Fortunately, in this case, it appears we were able to clear up three cases. It's an ongoing investigation. We've had other incidents in the area. We're checking everything we can check," Board said.
