WAVERLY - Additional details may be released today about an accident at Carr Concrete Thursday that injured two workers and sent one to the hospital by medical helicopter, a company official said.

The accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at the concrete facility off West Virginia 2 near the Waverly Volunteer Fire Station, said Chief Terry Hefner.

The identities of the two injured men are expected to be released later today along with other details of the accident, Chris Keney, manager of human relations for Carr Concrete said.

"We are in contact with their families, but until we can get more information from OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and finish our initial report, there is little we can release," Keney said.

The initial investigation may be finished this afternoon, he said.

Hefner said two employees of the facility were working on a section of pre-fabricated concrete for a dam. The accident occurred near the loading dock at the plant, he said.

It was initially reported that the workers were using a crane-type machine to move the large piece of concrete, but Keney said the machine was a cable and wench system, not a crane.

Somehow, the crane came unbolted and fell, Hefner said.

"The machine flopped, knocking one of the men off and landing on the other," Hefner said.

The worker who was operating the machinery was thrown to the ground and the machine landed on the other man, pinning his leg, said Assistant Chief Michael Tanner.

Hefner said the man was still trapped when crews arrived on the scene. Tanner said firefighters used a forklift and cribbing to free the trapped man.

The man who was trapped under the fallen crane was taken by medical helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center. The man who was thrown from the crane was taken by ambulance to Marietta Memorial Hospital. The helicopter responded from McConnelsville, Ohio.

The condition of both men was unavailable.
