PARKERSBURG - West Virginia Division of Highways has announced lane closures for area bridges, starting Monday.
Lanes will be closed on the Parkersburg-Belpre Bridge and the Williamstown Bridge to allow for the annual safety inspections of the bridges along the Ohio River, said Cliff Essig, DOH District 3 bridge engineer.
''Intermittent lane closures are scheduled to occur,'' Essig said.
Lanes on the Parkersburg-Belpre Bridge will be closed from Sept. 15 through Sept. 26, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Lanes on the Williamstown Bridge will be closed from Sept. 15 through Sept. 19, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Motorists are urged to use caution on both bridges and be mindful of having enough time to get where they are going, Essig said.
''Motorists can expect delays to occur and should seek alternate routes,'' he said. Essig reminds people to obey traffic signs and people directing traffic on both bridges.
The Parkersburg-Belpre Bridge will have lane closures for two weeks. The first week will be spent cleaning the bridge of bird droppings, before the inspections begin, Essig said.
With the recently opened Blennerhassett Island Bridge, Essig doesn't expect too many delays with the lane closures on that bridge.
On the Williamstown Bridge, the hours lanes are closed might change as needed.
''The hours may be adjusted according to traffic conditions,'' Essig said. ''Flagging operations will be maintained to allow for two-way traffic during the lane closures.
''The inspections should not affect any wide or super loads from crossing the bridge.''
HNTB Consultants will perform the inspection on the Parkersburg-Belpre Bridge while GAI Consultants will perform the inspection on the Williamstown Bridge.
