Public Debt space being studied
By JODY MURPHYPARKERSBURG - The U.S. General Services Administration is studying the future space needs of the Bureau of Public Debt and its facilities in downtown Parkersburg.
"The GSA is starting to work with the Bureau of Public Debt to plan for the expiration of the leases at 200 Third St. and the Hintgen Building," Regional Public Affairs officer Gina Gilliam stated in an e-mail to The Parkersburg News and Sentinel.
The lease on both the Third Street and Hintgen buildings expire in 2014.
Gilliam said the GSA's Office of Workplace Programs is conducting an on-site requirements development study.
"No decisions have been made at this point on whether the existing facilities will continue to meet the space and functional needs of the Bureau of Public Debt beyond the lease expirations," Gilliam stated.
"They will let us know by the end of October what they found in their space study," Mayor Bob Newell said. "There is not much we can do or say until we know."
However, Gilliam also said the GSA and Public Debt remain "committed to keeping operations in the central business district of Parkersburg."
Newell was relieved by the bureau's commitment to remain downtown.
"The reason we would like to see it remain is we are getting the downtown more like a business park, which supports all the restaurants and shops, and more restaurants and shops. We are relieved to know that they are staying in the city and in the downtown."
In the spring it was announced the bureau had found an area in Pettyville where to construct a long-awaited sorting facility.
The 65,000-square-foot facility will serve as a sorting and mail center. The site would consist of roughly 43,000 square feet of warehouse and 18,000 square feet of office and storage space. The site is adjacent to the southside Wal-Mart.

What does Parkersburg and Communist China have in common? They both have financilly benefitted by George W. Bush and his Congressional Cronies with their out of control spending and the record setting (Chiness financed) debt. No wonder that the Bueau is looking at building and expending it facilities (with all the new people it has to hire).

Not true, Byrd had nothing to do with public debt coming to town. It started out as a emegency relocation site during the cold war in case og attack.
