PARKERSBURG - Parkersburg police released further details about a Thursday incident where a Parkersburg man was shot by a police officer.

John Michael Sadler Jr., 19, 3204 25th St., Parkersburg, was shot by Sgt. Jay Hart after allegedly aiming a shotgun at the officer, said Gerald Board, Parkersburg police chief. According to a St. Joseph's Hospital nursing supervisor, Sadler was still in the intensive care unit and listed in stable condition.

An arrest warrant was signed Friday for Sadler by Wood County Magistrate Joyce Purkey on a felony charge of wanton endangerment with a firearm. Other charges are pending, police said.

Detective Decker Moody said Sadler called 911 around 12:20 a.m. Thursday and threatened to kill himself as well as any police officers who came to his home and that he had several weapons, including a 7mm rifle, capable of firing from a mile away and a large quantity of ammunition.

Moody said that as police arrived, two shots were heard fired inside the home. Only Sadler was home at the time, he said. Shortly after the call, several police officers, Parkersburg SWAT, police negotiators and emergency-medical personnel were on scene and police established a perimeter outside the home, Moody said.

Board said the 911 center called residents in the neighborhood and warned them to stay away from windows and retreat to a safe place in their homes.

Moody said that officers spoke with Sadler on the phone in an attempt to diffuse the situation, but Sadler hung up the phone.

According to the criminal complaint, Sadler "exited his residence with a loaded shotgun, a loaded 7mm rifle and a large knife and began walking down the street to the area where Sgt. Jay Hart was maintaining a perimeter. Sgt. Hart ordered the defendant to put down his weapons at which time the defendant pointed the shotgun at Sgt. Hart in a firing position. Sgt. Hart, in fear for his life and in an attempt to protect others, fired his weapon, striking the defendant."

Moody said Hart fired two shots with a shotgun and wounded Sadler in the upper right torso.

Board said he believes Hart's action was justified.

"Sgt. Hart acted in good faith and responded exactly as he should have," he said.

Sadler was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital early Thursday morning where he underwent surgery. He was listed in fair condition, hospital spokesman Jill Parsons said.

Sadler attended Williamstown and Parkersburg high schools. According to a neighbor, he worked for a company in Marietta until he was laid off several weeks ago because the company was moving.

Moody said police found a spoon with burn marks and white residue and "marijuana" pipes with residue and that police are waiting the results of residue tests.

Board said Hart leads the Neighborhood Crime Unit. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of a routine internal and external investigation into the incident. The external investigation is being performed by the Vienna Police Department and Wood County Sheriff's Office.

so I see it's not ok for me to seem judgemental about something so close to my heart, but you in turn can judge me without knowing how deep my pain is?

beez1066, I have had tragedy in my family, that's why I am so adamant about people threatening family or anyone else with guns or weapons. My best friend was shot to death by her husband, he said if she was leaving, he was going to kill her and did.

This could very well have ended in death but it didn't, so excuse me if I seem judgemental and harsh, my friend is dead and her family mourns their only child because of somelike like Michael, he just didn't have a chance to follow through.

As for sheila...You are awful judgemental in most of these articles. I sincerely hope you never have to eat your own words someday if a tragedy happens in your family.

Allison , I am sure you and your family are in a lot of pain from this. I can personally testify what it is like to have a family member in crisis. I do think that the officer did the "right thing " by protecting himself. I am glad though the young man lived and has been given another chance. Mental illness can be treated but it can also make you do things a normal person wouldnt do. I will pray he gets the help he needs.

One more thing to answer your statements, I hope none of your family dies at the hands of a gunman, and how do YOU know what the police could have done to make him put his weapons down? They did everything they could and he still did not comply, Oh By the way, I never thought I was God, but Michael wanted to act like God when he threatened someones life, go judge yourself Allison, boo hoo for Michael, he is lucky to be alive, 12" of intestines, My mother lost half her intestines then half her liver and then her whole life to cancer, and she didn't threaten anybody, she got a death sentence, Michael gets to live, yay!

Oh and Allsion, I didn't judge him by saying he is a foolish person, he showed us that for himself. My best friend was killed by her husband who shot her in the chest with a 44, she couldn't do a thing about it, she was an only child and this man took her life.

People who threaten family with murder many times follow through, and don't worry about God judging me, that my dera is between Him and I and no-one else, so before you cast your judgement, think about my friend and her parents who now have no child.

Allison if you think what he did, did not deserve the outcome, then you are a big a fool as he is. You do not know the pain of losing a friend or a family member, mentally ill or not, it's still illegal to threaten someone with a gun!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wake up Allison, this isn't wonderland.

Well Allison, I never said Michael didn't have a good heart, but being mentally ill STILL does NOT give one the right to threaten their family with weapons, this could have turned out a lot worse, what if he did kill his family, would you still be defending him then? Saying "poor Michael didn't MEAN to kill his family"?

Bullpuckey, mentally ill or not, still doesn't make it legal to get drunk and brandish weapons, threaten family and point guns at the police, he shoud be glad they didn't kill him, if this were a larger town, maybe even Charleston, he would have been going to the coroner in a body bag.

Poor Michael, is now suffering the consequences of his actions, mentally ill? Or just drunk and foolish? Either way, things could have turned out far far worse for his poor family whom he threatened to kill, he could have done it either by accident OR on purpose, poor Michael will NOW see what it's like to be on the other end of the barrell.

That 7 mm is a powerful gun if it can fire from 1 mile. but I have a Savage 22HP that can fire from 50 to 100 miles away. Of course someone has to go out there and pull the trigger.

Oh, and the officer could have LEGALLY shot to KILL!!!!!!!!!!!!

He had a legal right to kill this person but DIDN"T, the kid should be apologizing for his actions and thanking the cops for NOT KILLING HIM.

I disagree 91monterov6, jail is exactly what these kids need, a little stint in the old pokey will surely wake him up, the courts are letting people (kids mostly) get by with way too much stuff and it's time this boy realizes, he cant drink, threaten family, aim guns at cops and get by with it!!!

Send his little happy self to jail and see h ow he like the accomodations, I bet he wont go back for round 2 if he gets a good enogh taste of it the first time.

Do you think its ok for me to brandish weapons and threaten my family, and when cops come, for me to point guns at them?

If you do, there is something wrong here.

an arrest warrant????? come on.... the kid needs some mental help, not to be locked up and turned into a true criminal.

Yes he acted in good faith and was doing the right thing. Thank you Sgt. Hart for your quick thinking, now you can go home to your family. Sadler needs a real wake up call to life if he believes that guns and drugs will help him in life. Maybe he can think about it when he sits in Regional for aiming at the officer.
