Service held in Belpre for teen

Joy was killed in car accident

By JOLENE CRAIG
POSTED: August 19, 2008

BELPRE - Roughly 1,200 members of the community turned out to remember the life of Alex Joy on Monday at Belpre Elementary School.

"Alex's passing has left an indescribable void in the loves of his family and friends," said Pastor Kent Lowther, who conducted the memorial service.

Joy, 15, of Belpre, died in a car accident on Farson Street around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

According to the report by the Belpre Police Department, the vehicle Joy was driving was traveling west on Rockland Avenue and failed to stop at Farson Street, slid through the intersection and over the curb through a chain link fence, then struck a tree before coming to rest next to a light pole in the parking of International Converter. A tree branch penetrated the windshield, an emergency worker said.

Joy was dead at the scene, officials said.

"To allow ourselves to get lost in the mix of grief, sorrow and loss would do a disservice to the memory of Alex," Lowther said.

Family members and friends wept through the hour-long service as Lowther and Pastor Larry Cooper asked people to not question what happened and to remember him.

"If every person would do one positive thing in honor of Alex, honor the life he loved, then we can make a difference in our community," Lowther said. "We can honor him as we remember him."

It was also announced at the end of the service that Joy's 13-year-old passenger was no longer being given medication and organs would be donated.

The passenger, who has not been identified by authorities, was taken to Children's Hospital in Columbus following the accident.

Belpre City Schools will offer counseling to students and others affected by the tragedy when school begins Wednesday.

"It helps people to talk about it and get through the grief," said counselor Karen Waller.

God bless the sensible, and spare us from the ignorant, and their lack of judgement.

To the police officer who felt the need to pursue this vehicle at over 100 mph. Please, the next time this type of thing happens, stop and think.

The loss of a child is something no one should ever have to endure. However, let us not forget what has happened and what we all can do to prevent another senseless death.
