RIPLEY - City council approved the hiring of Ronald E. Smith, retired officer, Tuesday as the prevention resource officer for Ripley Middle School.

The approval came following a recommendation by police Chief Jim Fridley, who said Smith was the best person for the job and "comes highly recommended."

Smith was the first PRO hired in West Virginia and works to train other officers for the program.

After being sworn in by Mayor Carolyn Rader, Smith said he was excited about the position, which he said was instrumental in the guidance of kids. Ripley Middle School received the $28,000 grant last month through the Department of Criminal Justice.

In other matters;

  • Council approved a payment of $60,992 to Thrasher Engineering for work regarding the Main Street Project, as well as a $64,000 change order for the project.

A representative from Thrasher Engineering said the was associated with issues concerning the laying of conduit as well as areas that required additional concrete.

Council had a $100,000 contingency fund set aside for costs such as those associated with the change order.
