PARKERSBURG — The Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has opened shelters to help those displaced by flooding.
Sharon Kesselring, financial development director for the Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the Red Cross, said more than 40 homes had been evacuated in Glenville because of high water as of Thursday afternoon.
“It’s a substantial number of homes and there will probably be more,” Kesselring said.
Katy Sulfridge, emergency services director with the Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, said a shelter was opened in Sandyville at the Silverton Volunteer Fire Department station and a second is open at Sand Fork Baptist Church.
The Red Cross expects homes in Grantsville to be affected as the Little Kanawha River continues to rise, Kesselring said.
In an effort to continue to help those affected by this disaster, the Red Cross is taking donations.
“All disasters are local, so we must fund raise,” Kesselring said.
Money donated will go to pay for fuel, shelters, food and other assistance.
