Schools’ policy discriminatory
I just want to inform all the taxpayers in Wood County about what happened last week when I tried to enroll my 4-year-old in Pre-K at Jefferson Elementary. I was not able to because I am not on the welfare and now I can’t get my daughter in any other school because I am not in their district.
How sad is that? I think it’s pretty sad that because my husband and I work we don’t qualify to go to the school in our district that we all pay taxes on.
They say we don’t discriminate, but what else would you call it?

Goodness....how did all this come about over a letter based upon a school's ethics? The topic was not about the "welfare system" nor was it about "a typing error"....nor was it about "going back to school"....it's begining to sound like a yahoo chatroom on here. I'm not perfect but I believe the topic was "a child not getting into school because the parents were NOT on welfare. I strongly disagree with the lady who slammed Jefferson Elementary, the parents, the students etc. But goodness not being the quaint one of the bunch here, but what's next as the subject matter?

Wow Art, thats pretty harsh, most people back in the OLDdays used to call it "being on the dole" I dont think the improper use od one word, (if it even is actually IMPROPER) is a valid reason to be so judgemental and state that someone "needs to go back to school" Havent you ever made a spelling error? If you have not ( I am not perfect, I make errors in life all the time, a lot of spelling ones too) than maybe you are one of the "special ones" who make no mistakes!! wow! As I stated to the others who were so hard, SHAME ON YOU Art!!

I also agree with "Mellow". Good Shepherd pre-school is excellent. My youngest child went there and they have a wonderful program and the staff is really wonderful. They provide an excellent foundation for your child to succeed in grade-K.

I'm fairly sure that the Pre-K program was designed to ensure that kids who were underprivileged got a chance to go to preschool even if their parents couldn't afford to pay. Therefore, they take income-based kids first and then if there is room left over they take open enrollment. Because Jefferson is in the lowest poverty section of the city, it's hard to get into that preschool without a low income. Fortunately, there are other options for you. If you live right near Jefferson, I highly recommend Good Shepherd Head Start. The teachers are phenomenal and it is an excellent program that really helps build the kids as students and as people. I have three kids at Jefferson and although they would have qualified for Pre-K there, I sent them to Good Shepherd for preschool and then Jefferson for Kindergarten. Good luck! Also, I'm not 100% sure but I know of kids who go to schools outside of their districts and the county is required to bus them so maybe check into that also.

WVUFAN, I think your rant is off topic, just like "someonewhoworks" yu could almost be the same person. The OP stated she couldnt get her child in school BECAUSE SHE DOESNT GET WELFARE... Maybe you should wright a rant letter to the editor about welfare, I would love to see the responses.

I would like to know the whole story on this one. But, I wonder if the reason why she couldn't get in was because they only have so much room for so many kids. You have to be there the first day and it's first come, first serve. My son wil be going to Lubeck and that's the way it is there. They fill up very quickly. They only have 2 classes for pre-k. Don't go to the board of education. That place is a joke. I wouldn't wish that place on my worst enemy.

I am absolutely shocked by the allegations made in this letter. I am in the Jefferson district, infact I have four children that attend this school & has since kindergarten. Both me & my husband PAY taxes & we are not on WELFARE. It is totally proposterous to think that is the only way a child can get into that school. There are many, many parents who have children who attend this school that are not on welfare, and yet our children still go there. I do not know the whole story as why your child was not allowed to attend there, but because your not on welfare I'm sure is not one of the reasons. I believe every child should have the right to attend school no matter where they live or their parents financial status. However, I do not agree with you blasting comments that a person has to be on welfare for their child to attend Jefferson Elementary Center. It happens to be one of the best schools there is.I'm sure that I speak for all JEC parents...your wrong completely.

I would suggest calling the board of education and discussing the situation with them, maybe they can help. Good luck, at least you are a caring parent who wants their child in school. And as a side note to someonewhoworks, not all people that get the "Gold Card" and food stamps do so by choice, they may disabled or abandoned by their spouses and left alone with young children and unable to work for various reasons. I think its sad that someone would publicly "down" someone who does have to use the welfare sysyem, shame on you.

The system here in WV is a joke, if you dont work, mostly because you dont want to you then get a free ride, the "Gold Card" free medical insurance, free food, free rent utilities. The working people are the ones that lose and suffer.
