Helen Smith Gerwig passed away March 16, 2008, at the age of 100.
She was born in Parkersburg, on Jan. 6, 1908, the daughter of the late Elva and Dorr Smith and was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Charles Gerwig; a brother, Richard “Dick” Smith; a sister, Alice Smith; and a nephew, R. Michael Smith.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Helen G. and Frederick P. Albright of Parkersburg, Marjorie G. and H. Leo Mehl of Hudson, Ohio, and Jane G. and Terrence Wharton of Fairfax Station, Va.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one niece and her husband, Jeannie Smith and Freddie G. Lawson of The Woodlands, Texas.
She earned her degree in education from West Virginia University and taught elementary school in Wood County from 1948 until retiring in 1970, and then continued to teach at DeSales Heights for the next 18 years. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Mrs. Gerwig was past president of the Junior League of Parkersburg, a member of A.A.U.W., Delta Kappa Gamma, P.E.O. Chapter Q, W.Va. Retired Teachers Association and received the Lifetime Achievement WEALTH Award.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church with Father Larry D. Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Parkersburg. Visitation is from 1:30-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg.
