Self-taught drummer holds clinic at PHS

PARKERSBURG — A well-known and respected drummer from Charleston visited students at Parkersburg High School Wednesday, teaching some of the finer points of percussion instruments.

Charles Shelton Jr., a 22-year-old, self-taught drummer and musician, held a drum clinic at the school for some 70 students, showing them drum techniques, equipment and styles of play to help boost their interest and passion for music.

PHS Band Director Dan White said the clinic was a good opportunity for the students.

“They get to see there is always a chance for someone to make something out of their interest in music,” he said. “It just takes time and effort and a lot of practice.”

White said music instructors and band directors mainly focus on specific kinds of music and styles of play. Being exposed to an artist like Shelton allows students to see more of the possibilities in music and peeks their interest in other forms and styles.

“He gives them little tidbits, things they haven’t seen before and that I haven’t been able to teach,” White said.

Shelton said he enjoys the chance to give back and reach out to young people.

“When I was in high school, I never had anyone come through and talk to us on a professional level, to talk about what it was like on the road and how to do this professionaly, and that was something I always wanted and needed,” he said. “It helps the students understand, if they want to achieve it, there is a chance to do it.”
