WALTON — A woman is dead and man seriously injured in an apparent murder and suicide attempt Sunday on U.S. 119 south of Walton in Roane County, police said.
Candis Kuhn, 43, formerly of Marmet, died from a gunshot wound to the head just before noon Sunday while at the home of her ex-husband, Nolan “Billy” Kuhn, 45, at 9526 Charleston Road (U.S. 119) just south of Walton, said Sgt. K.G. McCord with the West Virginia State Police.
Trooper J.T. Portillo found Nolan Kuhn seriously injured, but still alive, from a gunshot wound to the head, McCord said.
Candis Kuhn was pronounced dead at the scene and Nolan Kuhn was taken via helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital. A hospital spokesman said he was under evaluation Sunday evening.
Candis Kuhn’s body was taken to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office in South Charleston for an autopsy.
McCord said police believe the Kuhns had an argument and Nolan Kuhn allegedly shot his former wife with a rifle, called 911 and then turned the rifle on himself. A return call from 911 went unanswered, he said.
Police also found a dog that had died of a gunshot wound at Candis Kuhn’s feet, McCord said.
McCord said the couple was only recently divorced, but their relationship at the time of the shooting is unclear, he said.
The West Virginia State Police Crime Scene Unit was dispatched to the scene. The shooting remains under investigation.
