Parkersburg captures MLK Invite crown

MARIETTA — Parkersburg High School claimed both the boys and girls titles at the Marietta Martin Luther King Invitational swimming meet at the Marietta Family YMCA Monday for a dominating 459-point combined team win.

Marietta High School finished fifth in girls events with 139 points while the boys tied for third with John Glenn High School with 141. Williamstown High School finished sixth in girls standings with 109 points and was seventh in boys standings with four points.

The Tigers finished fifth in combined standings while Williamstown was seventh.

Both MHS coach Jim McNerney and WHS head coach Shannon McCale were pleased with their team’s performances though, particularly their ability to shed seconds off personal best times.

“We dropped a lot of time today,” McCale said of her team’s performance, which included a first-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle from Madison McCormick.

The same was true for the Tigers, who look at the scoreboard more to see what their time was than what place they were in.

“It’s more about beating our own times. We had a lot of best times today,” McNerney said.

Marietta claimed six individual champions and had an overall strong showing, finishing second in four more races but like the Yellowjackets who field just nine total swimmers, lack of numbers hurt the Tigers in their pursuit of a higher team finish.

Freshman Devin Teer claimed two championships for Marietta, one in the 200 yard free style, which he finished in 1:57.42, nearly thirty seconds ahead of the second-place finish time of 2:22.91, and the other in the 500 yard freestyle, which he finished in 5:23.32, just over 25 seconds ahead of the second place time of 5:48.59.

“I feel really good about it,” Teer said of his performance. “I thought I’d be a little slower in the 500 than I was. I was really happy about that.”

Coach McNerney’s son, Sean, also claimed two championships for the Tigers. One came in the 200 individual medley with the other coming in the 100 yard butterfly.

Though the team didn’t have the high point totals to garner a first-place finish Sean McNerney was pleased with the performance of the Tiger swimmers and their ability to shed seconds, posting faster times than either he or Teer expected at the home meet.

“I think everybody’s done really good,” Sean McNerney said.

Hannah Morris claimed the 200 freestyle and 100 yard fly for the Marietta girls, who finished fifth in team standings.

Senior Kathryn Welch said she was pleased with her team’s showing especially considering they have just eight girls hitting the pool for the orange and black. Welch was also pleased with her own performance, where she set a personal best as part of the Tigers’ 400 yard free relay.

“I had a solid swim today,” Welch said.

Both coaches praised the work ethic of their teams with Marietta’s Tigers still showing up at the YMCA for practice at 5:30 a.m. even if the school system is on a two hour delay and the ’Jackets are continuing to put the time in as well, working towards improving as swimmers.
