WV > Mineral Wells

November 7, 2007
Parkersburg News and Sentinel
Located at the intersection of Interstate 77 and West Virginia 14, Mineral Wells is a small but thriving community south of Parkersburg, W.Va.

Many restaurants and motels have located in the area because of the presence of the interstate.

Travelers a century ago stopped by the area for more than a bite to eat and a good night sleep, they stopped to experience the “miracle” powers of the mineral wells in the area.

The wells were discovered around 1860. Soon they were so popular that the owner had to supplement the well with water from a nearby creek. A large hotel was built to accommodate guest, some of whom would spend the summer there. The structure burned to the ground in 1900.

The area is served by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office and a volunteer fire department.

Fourth Graders from Criss Elementary School went to the New Era Schoolhouse in Mineral Wells to see how children went to school in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. New Era is in its 10th year of providing an interactive history drama for area students, recreating a day in a one-room school in West Virginia around 1901 with a strict Victorian Schoolmarm, played by Patty Cooper. New Era was built in 1884 and originally stood on Pleasant Hill on Missouri Run Road.
