I don't know where this idea to provide bicycle lanes in Parkersburg came from but it's has to top all the faux pas this city has every made.

There is not a big enough demand for bike trails through the town because there's not a significant number of riders to justify the time, money, & effort to accommodate them.

I want to know why there not enforcing the Helmet Law! Other than the "purdy *rolls eyes* flower boxes" on Juliana I've only seen 2 bicyclists on that. And they were going to the Sly Fox when I was going to work after midnight. I have yet to see anyone in the daytime on any of them.

Your insinuation that all republicans are liars is both chidish and immature. We could start an entire thread on liars - from both sides - but why drag froggylake into this.

As far as the parking change on Market Street, it had nothing to do with car shows. Just Newell coming up with an idea and not consulting anyone or thinking it through. I'm not sure what this "experiment" cost as far as lane marking and later removal, but the entire attempt was a farce.

I have parked on 2nd St. when going to the city building. Yes, you back out into traffic, BUT, if you back out slowly and carefully, no problem. Any idiot driving down a street with diagonal parking should know a car MAY pull out, and should drive slowly, in the event a car does pull out.

The bike route on the streets surrounding city park rarely see a bike, at least in my neighborhood.

this bike lane crap is getting out of control...i have yet to see ONE bike on the julianna route that took a lane from CARS...go to the parks and ride, stop taking lanes from cars!...

IFHPED, I don't know exactly what the laws are for bikes, but I had to use mine the other day. I knew immediately I was taking my life in my hands. P-burg drivers do not share the roads, even with each other. The truck drivers think they own the roads and bicyclists need to use the ditches. So most often, it's safer to be on the broken sidewalks. It's not a good ride and takes a lot more energy, but safer. You might do an endo crossing a foot wide, foot deep, expansion joint, but your chances of survival are better than going up against any vehicle.

Those spaces were the only available parking for the courthouse area when I was there last week.

When you back up, you have to look where you're going and look for traffic. You have to back out of spaces at the municipal building. Going to make a bike lane out of those also?

I saw a bike downtown once.

If bicyclists are going to be given these advantages, then they should also be made to obey traffic rules.

As I understand, kids are the only riders who are allowed to ride on the sidewalk, yet, when I DO see a cyclist, I see adults on the sidewalks, cutting through parking lots, etc.

I thought adult cyclists were supposed to ride on the roadway, and follow traffic rules. I may be wrong. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

@freedom101..I park in the RCDI lot (next to the biking path). I've parked there for the last 15 years and have NEVER seen one bike on that trail.

I work downtown and park in the lot off 2nd by public debt. I cannot recall ever seeing a bike riding in the bike path that is already on second street. But the metered parking spaces are full every single day. Leave the parking spaces alone on 2nd and find a different location for the rarely used bike path.

That's it Bob - take away the money those meters make so that you can raise your user fee. People don't necessarily use those spaces because they are lazy. There aren't nearly enough handicapped spaces for BPD, so some people use the metered parking as the closest entrance to the building. If you're so gung-ho on this bike trail, why not look at 1st St? There is very little traffic back there. Put the bike lane back there and leave 2nd St alone. At the very least, return 2nd St parking to parallel instead of diagonal. Of course you can continue to do everything in your power to run all business out of downtown. Who needs to save the city anyway? Also, thank you Ms. Wilcox for holding your ground.
