Taking better care of ourselves

May 13, 2013

We West Virginians are among the most irresponsible in the nation when it comes to taking care of ourselves. We eat too much. We smoke too much. We take too many stupid chances with our safety....

I guess maybe we no longer have the right to be stupid, eat irresponsibly and all that. Do you really believe so called "research" that says that about West Virginia. I believe the same could be said about all 50 states. People are basically the same everywhere. To single out West Virginia when there are plenty of fat and stupid people in all the other states is wrong. Look around when you are on vacation. Do you see health fanatics everywhere, or ordinary people with a lot of health related problems because of poor choices, not because of the state they live in. Even if all of this is true, government cannot change people and throwing money at it will not solve the problems. It is individual responsibility that is needed. NOT government intervention and more spending.

The truth sometimes hurt. When it comes to health West Virginians do dumb things. West Virginians are too fat...just look at the folks at WalMart. West Virginians smoke too much...just smell the folks at WalMart...and West Virginians do not get enough exercise...just listen the folks at WalMart as they huff and puff their carts full of Chinese made crap across the parking lot to their gas guzzling SUVs and pickup trucks. Maybe financial incentives will work. It is worth a try...we have do something.

And telling us how dumb we are really motivates us to do better. NOT!
