Well if Pkb is going to be successful they need manufacturing companies like Rockefeller brought in with NGK and Toyota. This is what bringing in businesses is not mom and pop franchise shops. No more food, beer joints and hotels for Pkb!

The mayor is to be commended for this effort. This hotel could be a prime mover to motivate more businesses to locate downtown with the convenience of housing out of town workers and/or associates. This is a great move for Parkersburg.

Note to Mayor Bob,

You may want to take the time out of your demanding schedule and make sure that Mr. Morehead is up to date on any back taxes before you shell out $200,000 of taxpayers money.

I'd be interested in knowing what type of hotel this may end up being, before I applaud this announcement. I'm hoping it's upscale, though I can't see maximum occupancy of an extended-stay format for downtown Parkersburg. There's not a lot to see or do downtown or frankly, in the area. As tourists go, Blenny Island is probably the biggest draw these days and who would need to stay for a week to see it. Local businesses, companies and government travelers normally stay at the Blenny Hotel due to its proximity to said establishments. So I must be missing the whole concept of opening up another hotel downtown. I suppose the folks it employees will see some gain, and that would be good. I see no harm in selling the City property for the $1, but it's not fair that the Humane Society wasn't granted a waiver for their new facility, while this place is getting out of 5 years of B&O taxes. What's fair for one should be fair for all or for none. Come on Mayor where's your sense of community

@Hometowner12: It closed in the mid-late 80's. I went to a Christmas party there in 1983 or so.

Tax exempt for 5 years, etc., and council won't give the Humane Society a break for $2200 ??

"...We give up a little now to gain a lot down the road." Really? If we give the HS a little now, we will also gain a lot down the road in terms of fewer strays and better animal health.

Also, does this mean we will still get the big fancy hotel and re-routed traffic cluster **** on 24th St.??

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the Uptowner will be used for something besides the eyesore it has been for years. It will probably be a flop, but who knows? I mean, look around -there isn't much downtown anymore.

@TOEHEAD....DIABLO in PN&S language means....Joe Backus, and if my screenname dissappears it is because I have exposed him ONCE AGAIN!!!!

@PBURGHIKE......Yes we do like these out of town workers that do spend in our economy while located here.Dont hate the out of town workers, the hate needs to be directed at the lazy welfare bumms that wont get off their ARSE and get training for jobs in the real world. These out of town contractors are also providing good paying opportunities for local people, but I had one contractor tell me that most of them are there for a couple of checks and then they dont show back up.So hate on these companies they are just doing what they are being paid to do,they cant force the locals to come to work.

Yes it's always great to welcome out of town workers who send their money back home, who don't pay real estate and personal property taxes but use our schools, who don't volunteer at charitable organizations, who don't support local car dealers, who don't spend time coaching youth teams, who don't help with Boy Scout troops ... Yes we should all just love out-of-state workers who come to the area to take the money and run. And all this oil & gas will be out of city limits so they won't have to pay a user fee, which means the folks of Parkersburg can pay it for them, provide their police and fire service, make sure the roads are safe and passable. Welcome to the great demise!!!

The rich get richer and write the rules to take care of one another. While the small and truly community invested businesses carry the B&O tax load for the big guys. Plus their employees will help foot the "User Fee" tab as well. Another desperate move in a failing city with little or no creativity. Oh yeah here's the slap in the face ... "The agreement would offer $200,000 in development money for the project, grant a B&O Tax exemption on construction and for five years after the new business opened. It also would transfer ownership of a nearby city parcel of land to the Uptowner for $1 to be used for development of additional parking."

Good to see rooms coming available for the influx of out of town workers headed this way for the drilling companies, pipeline layers, and construction travelers when the fracking and cracking boom hits. That is, of course, if the greenies don't get in the way of success and we just build another park. With all the drilling expansion to the east headed this way I bet that the "rails to trails' was once again tracks and trains.

So, apparently the coward or cowards pushing the dislike button have nothing constructive to do.....other than precariously worry about other posters and what user id's they may be using....sorry, but I have much more important things to do. I must go rearrange my sock drawer then count the dust particles on my glass table.
