One last note: I now have a Chihuahua. Our mailman would not deliver if she was outside, because she barked at him, and ran the fence when he approached. I told him she has no teeth and can't bite. Finally, one day he came to deliver the mail, and there she was, barking and running and staring at him. He opened the gate, and she got so scared she ran up onto the porch, jumped on the glider, and sat there quietly til he left. She's my baby and wouldn't hurt a fly, but she will try to make you think she is superdog. :)

Sorry...ran out of room.

Anyway, dogs are grossly misunderstood. Even people who don't own a dog should talk to a trainer (not your neighbor, or cousin who lives in Reno, or some doofus on the street, but a knowledgeable person) about how to approach a dog, and especially TEACH YOUR KIDS HOW TO STAY SAFE AROUND DOGS!! There are a lot of dos and don'ts. Before you blame the pooch for all things wrong, arm yourself with proper information.

I hate it when a dog is destroyed just because it is the easiest thing to do. And, I have met some of the sweetest pits. I have played with them, cuddled them, kissed them, hugged them, and I am still here to talk about it.

Please excuse any errors--I am too tired to make any corrections tonight.

wildcitykitty is not wrong--he didn't say ALL dog owners are criminals, but a lot of dog owners ARE criminals, and the only thing the druggies care about is their own protection. (There have been many times that some of these low life druggies have fled, and left their dogs inside an apartment to starve. I know this for a fact. If they are going to do that, then they will also torment their dogs to make them mean.)

There is a first time for everything, so it has been said, and that includes dog attacks. Just because a dog has been docile does not mean it will always be that way.

My Ebby was very protective of our family, but she wouldn't have intervened in a problem unless I told her too. Shelly, on the other hand, would not let ANYONE get closer than 3 or 4 feet to me without growling a warning to stay back. I loved her for this, and felt safe with all of my dogs. Teddy, he was so laid back, he didn't care what was going on, but he was always by my side

Yea so take your taxes and GO. No one will miss you - the mayor won't even have to wipe your drool from his shoes anymore. I like dogs but I like babies better. I suppose your dog would be sllowed to run loose and eat any kid it wants. Try thinking before you type.

I'm glad the kids were not hurt, and with proper love and attention, they will overcome their fear of dogs.

IMO, check out the owner. Dogs are not born vicious--they are made that way by PEOPLE. Who knows what the owner did to the dog inside his home.

Investigate before euthanasia, and punish the DEED, not the BREED. Dogs, unlike most people, can be re-trained by someone qualified. Dogs don't know kids are kids.

Look under "vicious dog" section 19-20-20 and 19-20-21. This pertains to all residensts of WV, living in any city or in any county. The article states "neither child was seriously injured", I guess it will take a severe mauling or death of the child for action. Just remember this, law enforcement officers hands are tied in this matter. Under the state code 19-20-20, an officer may issue the person a citation or a criminal summons. Once the peson appears before the magistrate court, it will be between two or three months before the trial date; then it's up to the Magistrate hearing the case to issue the order for the dog to be kille, and that's the discretion of the magistrate. (19-20-20).

Now the city needs to pass a law in the city so any and all are aware they may be required to remove their dog from the city. Ohio has a state law that requires owners to carry insurance on their dogs, just like their vehicles. They say neither child was injured bad, but I will bet mentally the have been injured forever. Did the dog owner pay the medical bills?
