I would like to know, whats in President Obama's background to make you think he would use executive orders to limit or ban private ownership of certain types of firearms?

Overall gun violence has been on a steady decline for a long time. If we would take all the guns today mass killings would be done by insane people using explosive vests like in the islamist area of the world. You can't eliminate someone killing many people if they really want to.

Everybody is blaming guns for the tragedy in newton cn. A gun is an inate object the same as an automobile so do we blame the automobile for the over 10000 people drunk drivers kill every year or how about the over 30000 people killed in auto accidents. I don't believe the automobile kills all of the people without a responsible party being behind the wheel and the gun is the same. as usual our illustrious elected officials and the media get knee jerk reaction rather than trying to find the real cause of these tragedies.

@MrAlex: Many of the 23 Executive Orders will work b/c they do not depend on how well criminals and insane people follow the law. They address how well government officials follow the law -- such as, reporting criminal records & insanity findings in a timely manner, rather than letting the files pile up for years unreported.

Unless you suppose "criminals and insane people" and "government officials" are the same people?

@impeachobama: Can you show that socialists are in general more likely to ban certain types of firearms, than are politicians of other persuasions?

Maybe no one wants to answer your question, denver. Since you are such a broken record spouting your 'canned' liberal garbage, people are starting to ignore you. And besides, I'm still waiting for answers from you that I asked for months age. You can dish it out but you can't take it. WAH, WAH!!!

Guns, criminals and the mentally ill do not mix. Twenty 1st grade children and six teachers died to teach us this lesson at Sandy Hook Elementary School. People are dying everday across our beautiful country just so a few guys can play rambo with their assult rifles and large capacity gun clips. The price is too high. Our elected officials need to be brave and pass common sense gun control. While folks have the right to own guns, our children also have the right to live. Let's not take the right to live from them!

Denver, the proof that Obama would do so by executive order is a matter of public record because he said so across the national media if congress did not do it.

Roads, people, and cars do not mix as in 2009 an average of 93 people died per day in the US in automobiles. We should just get rid of them all. I think most people realize that we need to reduce gun violence but threatening to take away peoples rights to bear arms is not a good idea. How about we hold people accountable for their crimes. And before some of you liberal idiots run your mouth about my gun control stance, I am current military, and do not even own a gun! However, I am pro responsibility, as a society we need to start letting people take the blame for things and stop blaming objects. One day some of these liberal ideas will cause civil war in the US and it will be up to the military to stand and decide which side is right, I can't wait, I'll have my M-16 waiting (military issue that is)!!

That,s not my stance "shouldbefishin," that's "Itsnottolate" stance! Read the comments. I was wondering about this editorial, "whats in President Obama's background to make the person that wrote this editorial think President Obama would use executive orders to limit or ban private ownership of certain types of firearms?" Since he or she wrote, "No one aware of President Barack Obama's rhetoric and his background should doubt that if he thought he could get away with it, he would use executive orders to limit or ban private ownership of certain types of firearms." Can you tell me?

What is in the President's background that would make me think he would use an executive order to ban guns is his words denver. His viewpoints on guns and the control government should hold over them go back to his days in the IL State Senate, through his short time in the US Senate to his first term as President when one of the initial detailed objectives listed was to make the expired assault weapons ban permanent.

It's a stance he's promoted when questioned and after the tragedy in CT, he said stated numerous times that "if Congress doesn't act, I will." You can choose to ignore the facts if you wish but it doesn’t change those very facts. Given the chance, the President will ban as many weapons as he can. That’s the simple truth.

My problem is the Heller and McDonald decisions affirm that founding fathers intent, the right to bear arms is a fundamental right and if the President or any other liberal wants to change that, executive orders or Congressional laws are

continued from previous comment...

My problem is the Heller and McDonald decisions affirm that founding fathers intent, the right to bear arms is a fundamental right and if the President or any other liberal wants to change that, executive orders or Congressional laws aren’t enough; to ban weapons a new Amendment will have to pass to replace the 2nd Amendment. That’s the nuts and bolts of the argument but the President knows that. That’s why he did not issue an executive extending the assault weapons ban.

"AaronS" President Obama signed a law that allows guns to be carried in the national parks, he’s signed a bill that allows handguns to be checked and stored in baggage on "AMTRAK," and has preserved the limits on government information on traced firearms from getting into the hands of folks outside of law enforcement.

In other words you have less restrictions on guns under President Obama than you had under 8 years of Bush. Does that sound like President Obama would use executive orders to limit or ban private ownership of certain types of firearms? Is that not in his "BACKGROUND"

None of what you say changes the fact that the President has openly campaigned to reinstate the failed assault weapons ban policy that was in effect from 1994 thru 2004 or that he stated numerous times after the CT tragedy that he would look “any means available through executive order” in extending that ban. Those are facts that are easily verifiable to anyone not already biased on the issue willing to do the research Denver and nothing you say changes those facts.

To answer your question denver, there is nothing in his background to make anybody think he would use executive orders to limit or ban private ownership of certain types of firearms. All this editorial is, just more right wing propaganda trying to make people believe Obama and the Democrats are going to take your guns, one way or the other. That's all it is! And it most be working, because look how many are on here trying to defend a lie.

I notice that some people posting here tend to shoot high, over the target. If you do the same w/ your guns, you won't hit much; at the least, you'll give your target time to take some action.
