South, PHS think they could be 6-0
Visit the Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South football camps this week and you will hear virtually the same message coming not only from the head coaches, but also from the players themselves. Both teams are surprised and highly disappointed they will be taking a 3-3 record into tonight’s city rivalry game at the Erickson All-Sports Facility. In fact, the members of both football programs believe they just as easily could be 6-0. South points to injuries that caused them to go into each of the first three games playing with much less than a full deck. Yet, in each of those games, the Patriots led in the fourth quarter and only once did they lose by more than a touchdown. Parkersburg, meanwhile, has been hit by the turnover bugaboo. A late fumble stopped what appeared to be the Big Reds’ game-winning drive against Brooke. Lots of fumbles caused Parkersburg to lose its halftime lead against defending state champion South Charleston.
