South hopes to start win streak

September 4, 2008

PARKERSBURG — It was Monday, four days before Parkersburg South’s season-opening game against McKinley Technology. Patriot coach Jon Bolen was discussing goals with his assistant coaches. “I never hear anything about a shutout,’’ he said. So it was agreed the Patriot coaches would repeat that word over and over and over in practice. A shutout seemed a little preposterous. After all, South’s defense had allowed at least 34 points in each of its 10 losses the previous year. So guess what happened? The Patriot defense totally shutdown a fast McKinley team as South rolled to a season-opening 49-0 win. While Bolen was the one who suggested the “shutout’’ talk, when he saw McKinley Technology’s players during their pregame warmup, he figured that might be an unrealistic goal. “They were big and fast,’’ he said. “I thought to myself we are going to have to outscore this team.’’ South did. Outscored them by 49.
