Ripley encouraged by baseball prospects

By KERRY PATRICK, kpatrick@newsandsentinel.com

RIPLEY — Life in the Mountain State Athletic Conference doesn’t get any easier for the Ripley High School baseball team.

State championship contenders Nitro and St. Albans are just a few of the league members which will take aim at the Vikings this season.

“It’s a tough conference — everybody gets fired up for us,” said Ray Swisher, who enters his 34th season as Ripley y’s varsity coach. “I don’t know where we will be in the standings, but I think we will be among the top ones.”

Ripley finished last season 16-15. After defeating Parkersburg South in their Class AAA sectional opener, the Vikings lost two of three games to Parkersburg High School and bowed out of the tournament.

“We faced some good pitching — we just didn’t come through and Parkersburg did,” Swisher said.
