West Union Fest 127
July 26, 2008

West Union Fest 127 will be held July 25 and 26 at West Union in Doddridge County.

The annual festival will begin with a parade at 7 p.m. July 25 in West Union.

The activities on July 26 will include walking tours of West Unionás historic section, an antique car show, the âTrain on the Tracksã 5K Run/Walk, marble demonstrations, a Civil War display, a Native American village exhibit, a catfish fishing tournament, a bed race, a liars contest, live music, food and vendors.

In one of several new events this year, a Classic/Antique Car Show for cars and trucks from 1989 and older will be July 26 across from the Senior Citizensá Building in West Union. Registration will be 9 a.m. to noon with the show running from noon to 3 p.m., when trophies will be awarded. The registration fee is $10.

The car show proceeds will go to Emily Spadafore, a 7-year-old girl with a rare lung disease. Trophies will be awarded for Mayorás Trophy, Emilyás Pick, Top 25 and Longest Distance. For more information, call Larry Myers at (304) 873-1636.

Another new event is the âTrain on the Tracksã 5K Run and Walk starting at 8 a.m. at Spencer Park in Smithburg and running along the North Bend Rail Trail to the finish line on Main Street in West Union.

Various activities will be held at different locations throughout the day on July 26. At the Wall of Honor, there will be opening ceremonies at 10 a.m., music by the Neeleys4God Gospel Band at 10:20 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Patriotic Musical Revue by Janice McMurdo at 11:30 a.m.

At the Main Street 1 location, activities will include Glen Shaffer at 11 a.m., Liars Contest at 1 p.m., costume competition at 1:30 p.m., pie eating contest at 2 p.m., Cake Walk contest at 4:45 p.m. and Town Birthday Cake Cutting at 5 p.m.

At the Main Street 2 location, activities will include a 70th anniversary VFW Ladies Auxiliary reception at 11 a.m., entertainment from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and a bed race at 4 p.m. on Main Street.

In the Historic District, there will be free showings of the documentary âNo Drums No Buglesã at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Doddridge County Library, guided tours of the Old Stagecoach Stop at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., walking tours of the West Union Historic District at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and courthouse tours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Doddridge County Museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Lions Club will serve breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At West Union City Park, there will be weigh-ins for the Fat Cat Fishing Contest from 8 to 11 a.m. and marble shooting technique demonstrations at 1 and 5 p.m.
