The White house?
Is this house on Murdoch Avenue the final home of the former West Virginia Gov. A.B. White? White was the last Wood County native to be governor.
July 4, 2008
PARKERSBURG — Is an old house along Murdoch Avenue the final home of the state’s last governor from Wood County?
Some local historians say there is evidence 1040 Murdoch Ave. was the last home of former West Virginia Gov. Albert Blakeslee White. While there is strong evidence White lived at the property, there is still some doubt about the site’s ownership.
Jim Miracle, head of the Wood County Landmarks Commission, said until several months ago it was largely believed the home of former Gov.

Ghost Hunting
Thu, June 26, 2008 @ 1:49PM
We will have a guest blogger this week as I didn't do anything fun or find anything worth chattering about. Sharon Coleman, my friend and colleague, spent last weekend with The Ghost Hunters from the Sci-Fi Channel. This is a bit of my fan side coming out: I was and still am jealous. At least she got my press kit for season 4 signed! Here is her account along with some photos: My sister and I went to Philadelphia to meet the Ghost Hunters from Sci-Fi at Fort Mifflin and had a blast. We left about 6 a.m. on Friday and drove through West Virginia, Maryland, Deleware, and Pennsylvania to get there. We got stuck in traffic on I -95 and finally got to the hotel around 2 p.m. We checked in and drove around to park and unload. After settling in in the room, we went to the lobby to wait for the meet and greet to start. We saw Dave Tango arrive through the front doors and his dad was running around the lobby for while.

Goodbye 600 Starbucks
Wed, July 2, 2008 @ 1:56PM
Starbucks has announced it will be closing 600 stores and cutting 7 percent of the workforce, about 12,000 full-time and part-time jobs. I'm not surprised. Starbucks has been advertising recently - they have basically never advertised before because they have not needed too. Word of mouth got them enough business to expand. While I have never been in favor of purchasing $4 cups of coffee daily, many people disagreed with me. Until gasoline became $4 a gallon. I think that $4 morning indulgence is only the first thing people are going to cut out of the daily budget.

Winning is easy, losing is hard
Tue, July 1, 2008 @ 11:05AM
I have to clean this up because I don't want to spoil the breakfast cloth. Several press organizations are reporting that former President Bill Clinton is still mad that Barack Obama beat his wife Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president and told friends Obama can kiss his gluteus maximus if he wants his support. Despite Mrs. Clinton and Obama appearing in public to have made up, I never did think the former president buried the hatchet with Obama, unless it could be in his back. That's why I think Obama would be nuts to ask Mrs. Clinton to be his running mate. Obama would have to look over his back and wonder if it was he or Mrs. Clinton running for president.

Lucky by Rachel Vail
Tue, July 1, 2008 @ 9:10AM
June is the official start of summer, so I'm kicking off the season with a new book a week that you should be sticking in a beach bag to take on vacation, or just relaxing with in the backyard along with a glass of sweet tea. This week's is a teen romance offering. Be sure to check back every Monday for a new book for adults or teenagers! A young teen finds her world turned upside down by her parentsá financial woes in Rachel Vail's "Lucky." Phoebe Avery seems to have it made. She is getting ready to graduate from middle school and move on to the exciting world of high school, has cute Luke interested in her and lives a charmed life with her parents and best friends. She and her popular group are hosting the 'it' party at graduation this year and everyone is invited. But then Phoebe finds out a business deal of her mom's has gone sour. That means no money for the party or fabulous dress she wants.

Remembering Gov. A.B. White
Thu, July 3, 2008 @ 2:21PM
July 3 is the 67th anniversary of the death of W.Va governor Albert Blakeslee White. White was the fourth and final man to represent Wood County in the state's chief executive chair. White, a Republican, served one-term from 1901-05. In the mid-1920s, White served as state senator. He passed away in Parkersburg, July 3, 1941. I'll have an interesting story on White this weekend. In addition to Wood County's four governors (Arthur Boreman, William Stevenson, Jacob Jackson and White) we've had three other governors with ties to our area. Gov. Matthew Neely (1941-45), our World War II governor, was born in Doddridge County. Two-term governor Cecil Underwood is from Tyler County. Gov. John Jacob Cornwall (1917-21), one of the worst governors the state ever had, was born on a farm in Ritchie County. His stay near Pennsboro was short lived as his family moved to Hampshire County three years after his birth.

Your rights as an American
Wed, July 2, 2008 @ 8:18AM
I read my children an interesting bedtime story this week, the Bill of Rights. My seven-year-old daughter, Audrey, has developed an unwarranted fear of police, despite the fact there's police in the family – my uncle Bill Lazell was Parkersburg police chief back in the Sixties and also served as chief detective. I tried explaining that to Audrey. It didn't help. What helped, albeit slightly, was explaining to her that she has rights as an American. In America, these rights are seen not as a gift, but as something man can neither take away or give. These rights are inalienable. They are self-evident. They are the core of the American spirit and consciousness. You have a right to speak what you wish. You have a right to worship as you wish. You have the right to own a firearm to defend your life and property. Among the rights I find especially interesting are the last two of the Bill of Rights. They say people have even more rights than the ones we mentioned.

Finding a new job just got easier
Wed, June 4, 2008 @ 1:58PM
The Parkersburg News and Sentinel, in a partnership with several other are newspapers, launched a comprehensive Web site this week that is designed to help job seekers find employment and employers find qualified employees. Jobs.newsandsentinel.com went on line June 2. Ads from The Marietta Times, The Parkersburg News, The Intelligencer (Wheeling, WV), The Inter-mountain (Elkins, WV), The Journal (Martinsburg, WV), The Times Leader (Belmont County), The Herald-Star (Steubenville, OH) The Weirton (WV) Daily Times are all featured on the site, allowing job seekers to search the region from one location. Users can filter their search based on their geographic location. Employers benefit because they are able to reach the largest pool of potential employees. People looking for a job are able to post their resume to the site as well as a cover letter.

Happy July 4th!!!!
Thu, July 3, 2008 @ 7:46AM
My favorite holiday of the year is this Friday ... Independence Day! There's a lot of people, especially kids, who might disagree, opting for the commercialism of Christmas present giving and getting as being their favorite holiday. Some people might think Thanksgiving with many family and friends gathering around the dining table to enjoy good food and good company as the best holiday of the year. Some may think of the religious significance of Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter as being their favorite holidays. Other may think the traditional partying that goes with New Year's eve or the New Year's Day bowl games makes for their favorite holiday. Others may remember with solemn reverence their fallen brothers and sisters in arms on Memorial Day and/or Veterans Day. But for me, the best holiday is the Fourth of July. It's a huge national party that everyone can and should enjoy! It's the day when America is celebrated.
