Morbid fact of the day

March 9, 2011 - Jody Murphy

I am fascinated with serial killers, mass murders and deadly crime. For years I have been convinced former FBI agent John Douglas, one of the men who pioneered behavioral science and criminal profiling, is one of the smartest people of the 20th century.

Tuesday I was trolling through the Ohio's department of corrections website and stumbled on an interesting fact; no one from Washington County has ever been executed by the state.

Since it started state-sponsored executions in 1897, no man or woman from Washington County has been executed. That's about 385 executions (315 electrocutions and 28 hangings). There have been a handful of people sent to Old Sparky from Meigs County (including a trio executed on the same day in 1922) and two from Athens County.

Of the 157 inmates on Ohio's death row - none are from Washington County. I guess that's a good stat regarding crime in area; Washington County may have crime, but not serious enough crime to warrant the death penalty.
