It will still be Cyber Monday when you get off work

November 30, 2009 - Art Smith

Today is Cyber Monday. Not exactly a hallmark holiday, but a day when web traffic, in the U.S. at least, will be heavy with people shopping online for the perfect gift they were unable to find on Black Friday, No Name Saturday, or it’s Sunday and I’m Watching Football Sunday.

Yes I shop online at times; I also shop in traditional stores. Over the weekend I spent some time in the brick and mortar type of stores and was thrilled to see them crowded with shoppers.

When local stores are crowded it means local people are working. The shoppers are spending locally earned dollars that in turn are helping to pay the salaries of the local employees.

When you shop online the local effect is a little harder to see but can still be there. First of all there are some local companies that sell a lot of products online. Woodcraft, Fenton’s and Rossi Pasta to name a few. These local companies and their local employees benefit directly when people all over by their products online.

When you buy things online the product is normally shipped to your home. A local delivery person who in turn spends their paycheck locally puts it on your porch.

The theory behind Cyber Monday is that people will shop today while they are at work. Around 20 percent of sales will come from people sitting at their desk. Please don’t do it.

The economy has been pretty tough this year on a lot of companies. People reading this at work are getting paid to do something other than shop. That great deal you see online will likely be there tonight when you get home.

The most important things to remember about shopping online

• The great deal may not include shipping
• Returns can be a bit of a hassle, so make sure you order the right size
• If it is for Christmas, make sure it will be here in time
• The item may be available locally for about the same price
