"On The Edge" by Ilona Andrews

November 10, 2009 - Amy Phelps
New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews brings a compelling story of a group of families living on the border between this world and a fantasy one in "On the Edge."

Rose Drayton lives with her two little brothers on the Edge, which sits squarely between the Broken, land of shopping centers and cars, and the Weird, a fairytale world of wealthy aristocrats and magic. Because magic from the Weird bleeds into the Edge, "Edgers" as they are called, can use magic, and Rose, though she comes from a poor family, is one of the most powerful of all. Rose's family is of ill-repute, her grandfather was a pirate, her father, a rogue and her mother had many bedmates. Everyone looked down on her until the strength of her magic was demonstrated. This has made her a target, not only from other families of Edgers looking to get ahead and the aristocrats of the Weird, all wanting to further their bloodlines by either using her as breeding stock, a mistress, or an unwilling wife. Rose doesn't like any of those options and with the help of her grandmother, has been warding off all visitors. Until now.

Declan Camarine appears at her door, and Rose assumes (correctly) that he is a blueblood. Thinking he wants her as a wife or mistress, she turns him away, but he won't go so easy. She finally agrees to assign him three challenges and if he passes them, she will go with him willingly. But while waiting for the challenges to begin, Rose begins to learn there's more to Declan than his aristocratic exterior - and he may have other motives for being there. Something powerful and dangerous is visiting the Edge, and it's up to Rose and Declan to stop it.

I really enjoyed this book. The world Rose inhabits - that of a small group of families that keep their feuds to themselves and are distrustful of outsiders, is compelling enough, adding magic to the mix just makes it more fun. And the relationship and chemistry between Declan and Rose is a hot mix of love and hate. While Ilona Andrews is known more for her Kate Daniels novels, I'm really hoping for more novels from The Edge.

"On the Edge"is published by Ace. It is $7.99 and 309 pages long.
