Bonus days get us one day closer to Spring
November 9, 2009 - Art Smith
I consider the recent warm weather we have been having as bonus days. As I write this the little weather “bug” a the top of the page indicates it’s 73 degrees and sunny. I really didn’t need any technology to tell me that the weather is great outside, much nicer in fact than we should be having this time of the year.
I’m a winter hater of sorts. I hate the cold, and I hate the darkness – for the life of me I don’t understand why we just turn the clocks back for an hour to make it dark when we get off work. I really like warm weather, which makes me not care that much for the cold months.
I know there are fun things to do in the winter. I’m just not very good at them. The last time I tried ice-skating I ended up with a concussion and a trip to the ER. As much fun as it sounds to strap on a pair a skis and fly down a mountain I would likely be one of the those people that hit a tree. It really does look fun, but after being dizzy for years after the ice skating “incident” I should likely stay off the mountains. Sledding is another matter; you are already close to the ground so you can’t fall far.
I do take part in the sport of winter driving. I drive a lot, much of it on hilly curvy roads that tend to get covered with snow early. I’ve gotten fairly good at the sport. I can steer in the direction of the slide with the best of them. I still don’t like it; I’ve just learned to deal with it. Many times my routine 30-minute commute has turned into a slick one hour drive, I long ago developed the mindset that I will get there as soon as I can.
Whenever we have a great day like today, when the little weather icon at the top of the page tells us it is 73 and sunny we need to remember one thing. Not only is the weather great for the moment, but for every day we have like today, we will have one less day that the little weather icon reminds us that the weather is cold and rainy and will likely remain so until late March.
There are 130 days until Spring, every day like today is one day close to March 20th. Enjoy it.
