Simple search function is a path to a wealth of information

October 28, 2009 - Art Smith
There is a lot of information on this web site. So much information that at times readers can have a heard time finding what they are looking for.

Every story loaded to the site since the last redesign of the site in December of 2007 is still on the site and is accessible by using the simple search function located at the top of the site.

For The Parkersburg News and Sentinel that means that the reader has access to 21,129 news stories, obituaries, sports articles and more.

For some reason people have trouble finding the search, it’s right up there /\ at the top right corner of the page, where it says search and already has local news checked.

When they do find it people tend to over think things and they type in too much. Keep it simple. We are not as fancy as the engineers employed by Google.

If you are looking for a story about the Parkersburg homecoming, for example,  just type “Parkersburg homecoming” and you will get a lot more stories returned than if you typed “2009 Parkersburg Homecoming.” Our search feature is going to search for the string of words that you typed in and then return stories that match it. The first returned 100 “hits” while the more formal 2009 Parkersburg Homecoming, just 37.

Archives are important to a site; they provide a sort of scrapbook for the community.

As time passes, our archive will continue to grow as will the use of it.

Every day readers conduct around 800 searches on, conducting a total of 18,943 searches in the last 30 days.
