Strange Michigan Week

November 21, 2008 - Jim Smith
For an Ohio State football fan, this has been a very strange week.

There has been little hype surrounding the annual rivalry between OSU and "that school up north." Maybe because the game means so little in national standings or even Big 10 standings.

Yes, if OSU wins the Buckeyes would have a share of the Big 10 crown and could go to the Rose Bowl if Michigan State dumps Penn State, and if Michigan wins it could make its terrible season almost successful. But those are kind of small factors compared to the national arena upon which OSU has played the last few years.

During "Michigan Week" my e-mail inbox normally would be filled with jokes, sayings and comments from friends who support the Bucks and friends who hate the Buckeyes. This year I have not received one e-mail concerning the game.

Normally various clubs and organizations to which I belong would tease me about the upcoming game; this year only one or two comments.

Very strange. Maybe it's because OSU is 20-plus point favorite in the game or because WVU is playing at the same time Saturday as the Buckeyes.

Hmmm! Last year I was hoping OSU and WVU would play for the national championship. This year I fear OSU will be playing in one of the many so-called "loser" bowls.

Yep, a very strange "Michigan Week."
