South Harrison-Williamstown extra points

September 21, 2008 - Jody Murphy
A few weeks ago I was talking with a Wheeling sports writer. He told me if there was a year Williamstown was going to knock of the Knights this was it.
Wheeling has a young team, and this sports writer seemed to think it - finally - could be the Yellowjackets year.
I'm not drinking the kool-Aid just yet.
Williamtown is good - this is a suprise? - but are they up to the caliber Wheeling Central has set the last few years?
One thing is certianly clear. Williamstown is a much, much better team with Cameron Powell than without him. The senior tailback, after sitting out the first half against the Hawks, worked wonders for Williamstown in the second half.
Coach Terry Smith said Powell is more patient than his other, younger tailbacks and he's right.
Another thing that impressed me Friday was the play of Yellowjackets quarterback Adam Kerns. When I saw Kerns at Magnolia, I thought the Yellowjackets passing attack would be a weakness. Kerns did not look sharp against the the Blue Eagles.
However, He was like a razor Friday againts South Harrison. He was decisive and his throws were crisp and acurate. Kerns and the Yellowjackets pass attack could be the X factor in the post-season that finally brings a loing-awaited championship.
Did anyone else notice - I haven't checked Tristate Preps yet - South Harrison coach Brad Jett's comments after the game. Jett told me "“My hat's off to them. I wish we could re-load in single-A like they do.”
The look on his face when he said it was .... well, sarcastic. I'lll leave it at that.
One thing that struck me as curious Friday ... The Williamstown PA announcer was very good about giving scores from across the state - in all classes - save one.
For whatever reason, he would not divulge the St. Marys-Man score. We up in the press box all new the score - along with all the others - but he refused to announce the St. Marys score.
