Cockfighting's last holdout endsLouisiana finally has joined the rest of the nation in recognizing the intense cruelty of cockfighting. After years of allowing the fighting of gamecocks under the thin guise of "Cajun culture," the state has enacted a ban of the vicious activity, meaning Louisiana there finally sees no difference between putting two dogs in a ring to fight to the death and putting two roosters in that same ring. Cockfighting finally is illegal, but it came only after the Humane Society of the United States lobbied for it and placed intense pressure on former Gov. Kathleen Blanco to ramrod the ban through the state Legislature last year. The ban was long overdue.
