Level the playing fieldAn Associated Press story Wednesday took my blood pressure to a new record.According to the AP, 68 percent of corporations in the United States did not pay any income taxes between 1998 and 2005 and 68 percent of foreign companies doing business in the U.S. didn't pay any corporate taxes. While reporting trillions of dollars in revenue, not a penny in taxes was paid in taxes by the corporations that apparently wiggled through loopholes to avoid paying what work-a-day Americans have to shell out to keep the government operating. The Government Accountability Office issued the report but did not investigate why the corporations weren't paying taxes and -- no surprise here -- didn't identify which corporations avoided taxes. Considering 1998 to 2005 covers both Democrat and Republican terms in the White House and Congress, the lack of corporations paying their fair share can't be purely a Republican vs. Democrat problems ... it's apparently a tax code problem that average citizens can't take advantage of. I wouldn't mind paying taxes nearly as much if I knew the playing field was level between me and everyone else, including the multimillionaires and the Fortune 500 companies.
