Customer service a rarity

I admit it, I'm a picky eater! Like most of us, there are foods I like, foods I don't like and foods that upset me.

Over the years I've identified most of the foods that upset me, which include all things marinated and anything containing onions and/or garlic.

So I've learned to try to stay away from such food, but this last week or so has been a disaster for me and made me want to quit eating in restaurants.

It started a week ago when my wife conned me into going with her to Amish Country to visit the quilt shops. We stopped at one of our usual haunts for lunch, which, as it turned out, neither one of us could eat it. The waitress brought my wife a barbecue pork instead of a barbecue beef sandwich and her home fries were too soggy to eat. In my case, unlike what was stated on the menu, the chicken in the sandwich was marinated and the fruit was heavily sugared, both of which are no-nos for me.

Then this past weekend we ate at a small-town, mom-and-pop restaurant where we like to go and again the chicken was so heavily marinated that it was inedible. Again, there was no mention of marinating on the menu.

But the topper was Sunday evening when we went to a restaurant for me to get hot wings and my wife to get a small pizza. We were the only customers in the restaurant ... and now I may know why.

First the unsweet tea I ordered came sweetened and the napkin containing the silverware was stained with pizza sauce ... not a good way to start the evening. Then we waited more than 30 minutes for the hot wings to be served, but didn't get the pizza until we were preparing to leave about 20 minutes later. When confronted at the cash register about the lack of service and pizza being so late, the response from the manager was "it's not my fault," instead of apologizing for the problem. Needless to say, the waitress did not get a tip and we will not be eating there again, no matter how much I like the hot wings.

If all that wasn't enough aggravation, on Monday I went to two fast-food restaurants trying to get a garden salad. At the first restaurant the drive-through window order-taker repeatedly asked me if I wanted chicken on the salad and then what kind of chicken. I drove away without making the order. At the second fast-food place, all it had was a small side salad so I ordered two, only to be told they only had one ... and this was at lunch time!

I guess I just have to accept the fact that customer service is a rarity and far too many alleged servers just don't care anymore.
