Countdown to kickoff
July 24, 2008 - Jody Murphy
Sunday is the last day of baseball season for this long suffering fan.
For some of you baseball may run well into Oct. Having grown accustomed to watching a losing team struggle to compete for more than a decade, baseball season has become nothing more than a countdown to kickoff for me.
Sunday that kickoff, well, kicks off.
The Pittsburgh Steelers open camp next week. And Football season is here.
Not just the Steelers. Soon colleges and high school programs will spring to life, indicating the joys of fall are not to far away.
I may not have the much to celebrate as a Steelers fan this year.
The team has the toughest schedule in the NFL and may not make the playoffs. Then again they could go 8-8 - possibly 9-7 - and win the division.
The Ravens will still be pretty lousy.
The Bengals have a myraid of off-field probelms and a pourous defense.
While the Browns seem to be the sexy pick to win the divison, it seems to me the team is really hanging a lot on quarterback Derek Anderson and a shaky defense.
Like the Steelers, all the other teams in the AFC North have to play a difficult schedule.
Aug. 8, the Steelers first preseason game, can't come soon enough.
